Kennethβs POV
The aroma of the meal Kennethβs father was cooking filled Kennethβs nostril when he returned home.
βDad is at it again.β
Kenneth said to himself.
Kenneth offed his shirt and trouser. He had singlet and boxer left on him. He smiled and went into his room to put the dirty clothes he offed inside the washing machine. After he did that he went into the bathroom to take a shower and went into the kitchen.
βThe professional chef.β
Kenneth hailed his father.
βSon welcome. How are you today?β
βI am fine thanks old man and you?β
βSpoilt brat letβs see how you would look like when you reach my age.β
Kennethβs father frowned his face.
βCommon dad. You know I was just kidding around. I know how much you hate being told you are getting old lol.β
βSilly boy. Why didnβt you come straight to the kitchen after you came back from work? I heard your footsteps.β
βNothing really. I felt smelly. So I decided to take a shower and look fresh before coming to say hi.β
βAlright. Is the young lady back home?β
βYes she is. Her parents and nanny are excited.β
βWoow sheβs got a Nanny?β
βYeah she nurtured her from childhood. According to what her parents told me. The bond between
Laura and her nanny is strong. Unbreakable as they say.β
βThatβs cool. The nanny must be friendly I guess.β
βYes she is. I havenβt gotten the chance to speak to her one on one but I have a strong feeling sheβs cool. I recognize friendly people from afar.β
βPsychologist.β
Kennethβs father teased.
βFather of a psychologist. Your soup will burn if you donβt check it.β
βAlright you won today. Let me check .β
Kennethβs father checked the soup he was preparing and stirred it after he did that he lowered the temperature of the gas and covered the soup to steam it up.
Few minutes later he offed the gas and put the soup in the cupboard. Kenneth assisted his father to sieve the rice.
When all was set Kenneth arranged the dinning table and his father served the meal. It was delicious as usual.
His father smile brought harmony to his soul. Kenneth had taken two spoonfuls when his father spoke.
βSon guess who called today.β
βSonia. Am sure sheβs missed you a lot.β
βNo, not Sonia.β
βYou know I am not good at guessing dad. Please speak up already.β
βYour mom. She called today.β
βWoow mom called. Thatβs a good news.β
βYeah I was amazed. I didnβt expect her call. You know before your mother and I divorced we were already living like cat and rat . I know you tried your best to salvage the situation but your efforts were abortive. It wasnβt because you didnβt try your best enough it just wasn’t successful because we were at the edge. Divorce was the only option because we were always at each otherβs throat. We lost that peace and oneness to keep the family going. So it crashed. I know you have a lot of question in your mind regarding why I havenβt been wanting to talk about the issue each time you raised it up but I think am ready to answer all your questions tonight. I just only want you to know a family is family when thereβs peace and unity . A family is family when love exist not exit. Once there isnβt peace anymore and the efforts to restore it keeps on failing it’s better to say good bye than keep on harbouring a toxic environment. Zion junior I want you to know I considered you and your siblings and itβs precisely because of you guys I summoned the courage to do the needful. I am sorry if it still hurts.β
Kenneth sighed and spoke.
βI would be lying if I say I wasnβt hurt when you and mom divorced each other. It was the trying moment of my life. I am not trying to paint you as a bad guy in the story father but I felt you were not willing to make things work. Like you just gave up on making things work out so easily.β
Kennethβs father sighed.
βSon sometimes things arenβt the way we see them. Just pray not be a victim of a loveless marriage.β
βDid you ever love mom? Mom told me before you guys divorced that you never loved her. Was that true?β
βItβs a long story Kenneth. Believe me you donβt want to hear it . am afraid it will do you more harm than good.β
βI thought you said I could ask any question. Why donβt you leave the consequence of my curiosity for me to handle.β
βYour mother and I marriage was arranged. I never had it in mind that I would end up marrying Natasha your mom. I had a lover when I was younger her name was Priscilla. I loved her to a fault. She was the air I breath and till now I still cherish her. Priscillaβs voice was sweet and soothing. She had a way of winning even the toughest heart with her angelic smile. She was a paragon of beauty. Her skin shone during the day and glowed at night. She was everything colourful.β
βThen why didnβt you marry her? Why marry mom instead?β
βMy parents didnβt approve of our relationship. They said Priscilla wasnβt up to my caliber or status. They degraded her until she had enough. I was a coward back then I didnβt have the nerve to say no to my parentβs decision. I dare not question them. Even though I was hurt I had to part from Priscilla to make my parents happy. After your mom and I got married I felt miserable. I constantly had to battle with loneliness. I was married but I felt single. Eventually I accepted fate and allowed things to flow. I decided I was going to make things work since Natasha was willing to make the home a peaceful one. It was all going rosy until your mother met her ex. Her current husband as we speak. It was then I realized it was a tit for tat. Natasha didnβt agree to her parentβs wish to marry me because she was deeply in love with me like she claimed. She married me because her ex and her had issues and I was her consolation arms. I was heartbroken when I found out because I had already accepted fate. I had already resolved within my heart to Love Natasha and make our marriage work. Not like I made her life miserable when we got married but I felt I wasnβt doing my best. I was struck by your motherβs actions after she met her ex lover again. She started acting weird. She began giving me one thousand justifications why our marriage would never be a success. I held on I felt it was a faΓ§ade that would while away with time probably a misunderstanding until the harsh reality set in day by day. It then dawned on me that your mother wasnβt willing to make things work for the sake of you and your siblings. I tried my best but I gave up when I couldnβt take it anymore. I am not trying to make your mother appear like a bad woman but that was what happened. Am glad sheβs happy now . The way she sounded on phone made me know she was. Sheβs found happiness in the arms of the one she truly loved. Not everyone is that lucky. Not everyone.β
βSorry dad. I judged you without even asking for your own side of the story.β
βItβs okay son. Itβs cool you said your mind. At least youβve gotten the clarifications you need now.β
βYes I have thanks.β
βNow letβs continue with our meal. Itβs cold already.β
βCold meals taste more delicious dad.β
Kenneth winked at his father. His father smiled and they continued eating. After they were through eating Kenneth cleared the table and offered his father a chilled soft drink. His father smiled and told him to have a seat.
βSon itβs been long we gisted. These past few days youβve been busy. Has a lady taken you already ?β
βNo dad. Itβs work. I donβt have time for commitment now. I havenβt found the one that makes my heart sprint and brighten my day. After the breakfast I had last. I am halting anything called relationship .β
βBreakfast is normal son. You just need to move on and smell the toffee. That dosenβt mean you should give up on love. β
βWell Sonia and I had a video call today. She told me to send her regard. Sheβs missed you a whole lot.β
βTell her I miss her too when next she video calls. I guess the white manβs land is treating her good?.β
βYeah she looks more beautiful .β
βI knew she would. As for paulina she spoke to me today when your mother called. You know sheβs a mummyβs girl right from day one. Your mom will be excited with her being around. Itβs all good.β
βAnd me? Arenβt you happy you have me all to yourself? β
βDid I just smell jealousy ?β
Kennethβs father teased.
Kenneth and his dad were laughing when a call came in on Kennethβs phone.
Kenneth picked the call up. His face was beaming with smiles when he realized the caller was Lauraβs father.
βGood evening son. Sorry if I interrupted your sleep. I just wanted to pass a message across to you.β
Lauraβs father said.
βohh am all ears sir. I was gisting with my father when your call came in.β
βwell itβs nothing serious. I would love it if you invite your family to my event. I would love to connect with them if you donβt mind.β
βwoow I am honoured sir. I feel like a hero right now. Well my dad is the only one around for now. My siblings and mom arenβt available.β
βoops itβs okay. I would be glad to meet the father who birthed such a dignified man. It would be a honour.β
β I am sure going to sleep well tonight and have sweet dreams. You just made me feel like one million armies right now.β
Lauraβs dad chuckled.
βlet me not interrupt you and your father further. Have a lovely night. Take care.β
βThank you sir. I appreciate.β
βits nothing. Sleep well.β
Lauraβs father cut the call and gave Laura the β I fulfilled your wish already look.β
Laura smiled and pecked her daddy on the cheek. She went into Priscillaβs room after she left her fatherβs presence to announce the news to her.
Priscilla was excited the news brightened her mood. She couldnβt wait for the event to unfold anymore. 20th seemed too long she badly wanted to see the man who fathered the private investigator face.
