π§ Thou Shall Not Part TWO:
I wore a pretty red dress with flowers on the sleeves, I even managed to make matching scarf of the same color. I dressed up specially for the occasion.
It was my first evangelism out of the camp. I would be in the front line and I will convert as many sinners as I could after years of practice but I was still tensed and anxious. I had never been out of the camp and I didn’t know what to expect.
Miss Tega, the head of the evangelism group came in and divided us into sub groups. There were only five groups with at least six in one group.
The leader of my group was Steven. Steven was a tall lanky boy that wore square glasses.
Steven led our group to the car that will transport us to our location.
The drive to the town was roughly a three hours drive.
When we got to the town we were briefed on what we shouldn’t do.
We were not to accept anything from the sinners because they are unholy.
We were not to engage in any other discussion except from spreading the gospel.
We were not to read any foreign text.
We were to stay in sight of each other at all times. Anyone who breaks the rule is as good as dead.
“Okay we are going to be walking in groups of two and we are to meet right here in the next thirty minutes. Go and save the sinners” Steven proceeded to divide us into groups and I was grouped with Tina a smallish and naive girl of fifteen.
“So where are we to go now?” She asked.
“I don’t know, this is my first evangelism” Confusion was prominent in my tone.
“Perhaps we should talk to that girl over there, she seems to be around out she and it won’t be so awkward” she suggested.
We walked over to the girl who roasted yams and plantains. She looked very busy even though there was no customer. I swallowed my spit trying to remember how I was to approach.
“Good evening” Tina and I greeted simultaneously.
“Which one you want. The plantain never de ready but yam don done” she spoke quickly in Pidgin. I wasn’t familiar with pidgin because almost no one spoke pidgin at the camp but being good at observing I was able to deduce from her gestures that she wanted to sell us her products.
“No we are not here to buy” Tina said before I could open my mouth.
“So what are you here for” She was impatient but at least she was looking at us.
“We are from the Believers gathering and we’ve come to share the good news” I said.
The girl hissed and went back to turning the yams and plantain. Just then a man or rather boy with very defined muscles and handsome face came.
Ignoring the new companion and the fact that the girl paid no attention to me or Tina, I continued.
“At the Believers gathering you can be sure of redemption”
“I have a church I already attend, I am not interested” the girl said.
“Your church can’t guarantee you redemption” I said, hurt and annoyed by the manner of disrespect the girl regarded with me.
“What do you mean her church can’t guarantee her redemption” The new boy laughed lowly.
“It means that she is in the wrong place. If you are not part of the Believers gathering you are at the wrong place” Tina said. God bless her soul.
“Jude abeg help me check this plantain make I go house go check those children I de come” the girl instructed then faced us violently.
“Wetin una still de do for here, commot from my front” She pushed us to the side and walked away.
“We better leave” Tina whispered her advice. We were about to leave when Jude called us back.
“Please stay I want to hear from you girls and I also want to ask questions”
“What questions would you like to ask?” I asked as politely as I could.
“I’ve heard about your churchβ”
“We are not a church we are a gathering” Tina was swift to correct him. I could see the immense confusion rippling his perfect face.
“I thought you are Christians?”
“We are Believers” I reply him.
“What is the difference.”
“The difference is that we are redeemed.”
“How do you know you are redeemed?”
“Because the Vicar says so” Tina replied. I could sense her frustration and need to defend our faith.
“How does this Vicar know you are redeemed” He was enjoying this.
I was confused, I didn’t know what to say. I looked at Tina hoping she would jump to my rescue but even she was as stunned as I was. How did Vicar Paul know who was redeemed.
“Are you sure you are not the one who is in the wrong place?” He asked.
I didn’t know how I felt about his question but it rang in my head. How was I sure I wasn’t in the wrong place? All my life I’ve followed rules just because Vicar Paul said so but how was I sure Vicar Paul was saying the right thing.
I shook all those nagging thoughts away.
I am a Believer and I’ll be one till I die.
