π«π The Prince And I Chapter Five:
(Slave To The Royals π§)
𧑠EFUA KELECHI’S POV π§‘
I jump down, landing on my two feet, groaning silently at the pain it causes. My whole body aches though not as much as it did before I had a nap in the strange man’s room. Now that I think of it, I am starting to see how stupid I was to have foolishly climbed up to a person’s room. A Royalie at that.
What if he was one of the guards?
What if he wasn’t nice and turned me over to their king?
What if he had killed me the instant he saw me?
Many what if(s) run through my head and I shake it to stop my trail of distracting thought. He didn’t kill me after all, he even lent me his cloth. Mother use to say we trust blindly during danger. She was right.
Efua! There is no time to think, you have to find a way to get out.. My subconscious screams at me.
Yes, that’s right.
I look around to guage the secrecy of this place.. There is no one around, but if this is the royal house like I guessed, then it won’t be long before I get caught in it… I have to find a way to leave this compound.. Somehow. I take a bite into the apple on my hand and stesthily start to walk sideways, plastering myself to the wall as I do.
When I get to the end, I peep and I see maids aligned at the entrance of another house. Oh no! I creep back, breathing heavily.
Oh What to do Efua, what to do?
‘In a situation where you trying to escape from your attackers, try blending Into shades nearby’ I gasp as I remember father’s voice.. Father used to teach me things about self defense, he even taught me how to fight but not with a sword though.
Blend into the shades.. Blend into the shadows. I grasp the wall, studying the distance between myself and the trees.. Not much. As fast as I can, i dash past hiding behind the tree. There are about four of them before the fence. I gasp as I see the guards turn swiftly to the side of the trees.
Please don’t come.. Please don’t come. I mutter inwardly. And they didn’t, I breathe in a sigh and grasp my cloth trying not to make a sound as I make another swift dash to the second tree. They turn again and I hold my breath.
Don’t panic Efua, don’t panic… You can do this.
I take a deep breath and wait for the guards to look away again then I make a run for it. They will see me, I know… My eyes widens when I come to the place I had seen a fence… It isn’t a fence, instead there are different houses aligned around. I am still on the royal ground.
I turn back and see the guards already closing up on me, with a stern determination I never knew existed in me, I throw down the apple on my hand and resume running, ignoring my leg… I just have to escape. Did I not say I wanted to die? Did I not tell myself they should have killed me back at Aza…
I did but somehow I know deep down that I still want to be alive… No matter how the death comes, I do not want to face it.
I have to escape.
But soon my resolve start to get broken, when I see them start to troop out of the houses in twos, threes and fours. The palace guards. With stoic faces and swords trapped to their side. In total there is about sixteen of them.
Oh Efua, you are so doomed.
They encircle me and I have nowhere to go. This is bad.
“Seize her!” I hear the command and two of them rush forward to take but I raise my hand. Last time they did this, I let them take my friend and I without restraining but this I won’t let them take me without a fight.
“Uh… Wait!” I yell and surprisingly they stop. “You know, there is something called negotiating” I start studying their every move with the corner of my eyes. One of the guards steps to my front.
“Yes… There is but if you want to negotiate with us about letting you go, you better have a good deal to bring” he tells me.
He has the same accent that strange man has.
“Dubem, what are you doing? She is a slave.. You.can’t make a deal with a slave.” Another one snaps at him.
Oh.. His name is Dubem.
Dubem snaps his fingers. “Just watch me Uza” he turns back to me. “So tell me what’s your deal”
I raise my brow. “I know you won’t let me go. Whatever deal I may make so I have another request”
“You are one smart maiden… It’s good you know we won’t let you go” the one called Uza sneers at me.
I snap my head at him and I do not know why I say this, but I do. “One day. . You will wish in your heart, that I leave without as much as a burn on my skin”
“Your words hold weight slave, but you should remember that your fate lies in our hands… You might be surprised it would be death”
“Uza enough!” Dubem warns and looks at me. “You talk like you know what you mean… I will be looking forward to the day you just talked about” Dubem says.
I smirk, trying not to wince at the painful soreness of my lip. “Trust me, it will come” is my reply.
Dubem smiles. “So the deal… What is it about?”
I tap my feet on the bare ground as I look around to see them all staring scornfully at me. “A duel” I say.
“What? Are you really?.. Seriously? What does this slave take us for” Uza scoffs.
“You think I can’t take you down? I will have a duel with four of your men.. Uza included and if I win, I get to have an open discussion with the royal family.. If I don’t, you are free to do whatever you want with me” I say marveling at my own boldness.
“And make sure you pick your best men. . Uza included” I add.
