Jackie and Nkem were having a heated argument about her decision to visit her mother in-law in the hospital.
Nkem insisted she needed to see the woman and sympathize with her over what happened to her, but Jackie opined that it was a bad idea to go to the hospital where she could run into Mandy and come back depressed, or worse still, hurt.
“I’ll still not regret the decision to go if I run into Mandy and have to endure her shìts, because if that woman was my mother, I wouldn’t care if there were a thousand màsquerades in that hospital.
“She made me see hêll while I was in her son’s house, I know, and she is actually the major reason everything that is happening to my marriage is happening now, but I still can’t forget the fact that she had welcomed me so warmly the first time Joe introduced me to her.
“Mama had danced and prayed that I’ll give them sons to wipe her tears and repròaches for not having more sons.
“It’s quite unfortunate that I didn’t get to give her that joy she craved for , for twenty years, not because I didn’t want to, but because the appointed time wasn’t as immediate as we would have all wanted.
“She was a thorn in my flesh, and I make no excuses for her excesses, but she’s still my mother, because even though Joe and I will never be together again, that woman deserves to still hold this baby in her arms and thank God for doing things in His own time, and who knows, she may learn a thing or two from this, and become an advocate for women trying to conceive” Nkem told Jackie, who was already in tears.
“You know Nkem, I’ve always admired you for your resilience and determination to keep calling that woman ‘mother’, in spite of all she had been doing to you all these years.
“I’ve always considered you special for your ability to accommodate her and still understand that she was being a human, being impatient to welcome a grandchild since she has but a son
“But Nkem, after all she did and how she eventually made you have to leave your home at a time you should be rejoicing with your husband, I never imagined your broad heart would still be able to make more room for this woman.
“I’ll drive you to the hospital Nkem, I don’t want to sit here and worry myself to deãth, imagining things that could go wrong if that despêrate Mandy chooses to get physical with you, in this condition” Jackie said.
“It’s okay if you want to come, but I know Mandy wouldn’t dare get as cråzy as to attàck me.
“She played on my intelligence and sneaked her daughter into my home, got her daughter to turn Joe against me, and ultimately kicked me out of our home, at the very point he should be pampering me and praising God for what He has done for us
“But I know she won’t be stupîd enough to dare to attàck me so openly.
“She is a snîtch, and snîtches only work from the shadows, this I know” Nkem told her friend as they got into her car, ready to drive out.
Meanwhile, back in the hospital, Mama had just regained consciousness but was still on life support, a ventilator was still connected to her lungs, to help her with oxygenation and ventilation.
Mandy walked into the private ward and shut the door behind her. Smiling dévilishly as she approached the old woman.
Mama opened her eyes when she heard the approaching footsteps and began to throw her hands up and down, frantically trying to make some noise that could draw attention, but nobody was close.
“Ah Mama billionaire, aren’t you happy to see this wretchèd mother of bàstards?
“Wait, is that fear I see in your eyes? Relax, I’m not going to hit you, at least, not again!
“There won’t be need to do all of that, when I can so easily pull out these dàmned pipes and have the pleasure of watching you choke to deãth!
“Awww! I like the look in your eyes now! You must be regretting, wishing you didn’t act so high and mighty those times I was at the mercy of that cruel being I called friend.
“Don’t cry Mama, you don’t have to cry. Crying doesn’t change anything, if not, all these times I watched Nkem spend so much money, vacationing with Joe, when I was struggling to pay my children’s fee in a suitable school, my cries would have changed a whole lot!
“But it didn’t change anything about the decision Nkem made for me, compelling me to send my children to a lesser schools she called affordable, and giving me one of her old cars, while she cruised around in the fancy ones she kept acquiring.
“Yes Mama, crying didn’t change the fact that even though Nkem didn’t have a child to feed, even though she knew I had so much responsibilities because of the excuse of a man I married, she could only spare me a few hundreds of thousands once in a while, while millions of Naira sat in her account.
“So you see mama, I knew crying wouldn’t solve the problem, and that’s why I had to place my daughter in a position that would rescue me from the hands of poverty.
“Do you see why I can’t let you live to tell Joe all you heard from that joke of a guy that impregnated my daughter?
“I can’t let you live Mama because Joe will find out that Nkem is truly pregnant for him and that my daughter isn’t having his child, but that of her boyfriend in her.
“That would take me back to square one, or even worse, because I have already chased my husband away after I acquired the new status of Joe’s mother in-law.
“Getting found out and thrown away will mean I have to go back to being not just poor, but having to make my daughter nurse her pregnancy without a father, because as we speak, after ensuring that Max made Joe believe he is responsible for Nkem’s pregnancy, the dude has been settled and he is on his way to leaving this country with the new girlfriend he got himself” Mandy ranted, feeling so comfortable to tell he woman everything because she was so sure the old woman won’t be talking to anyone, ever again!
Mama began to wriggle on the bed, trying to hit the bell see saw besides her bed, but Mandy was quick to kick her fragile hand away from it.
She walked over to the ventilator and noticed that the mechanical ventilator in use indicated that the concentration of oxygen within the air is about 21% oxygen, but in some cases the percentage of oxygen is increased, and decided to work on the knob controlling the oxygen concentration.
“It’s okay mama, try not to struggle too much, it’ll make the whole process more painful.
“Try to close your eyes and imagine yourself on the other side, and soon enough, you’ll fall asleep and go to eternal rest.
“I turned the oxygen concentration to zero, so technically, you will soon begin to feel the impact of the lack of supply of oxygen to your brain. Goodbye Mama” Mandy said and bounced out of the room.
She bumped into Nkem who was trying to enter Mama’s room, and tried to keep her quarrelling for some time, to give mama some time to sleep off, but Nkem wasn’t willing to spare her even a glance.
Mandy made to pull Nkem roughly, but Jackie was already too prepared to let that happen.
She pushed Mandy away from Nkem, enabling Nkem to see Mama flipping helplessly on the bed.
“What is going on? I thought mama was said to have woken up? Mama what’s happening?” Nkem asked, almost losing her mind.
Mama kept pointing at the ventilator, but neither Nkem, nor Jackie who had rushed inside could understand what the dyïng woman who was trying to remove the mask over her nose, was saying.
Jackie hit the bell by Mama’s sides and Nkem in her confusion rushed towards the old woman and was pulling on the mask placed over the old woman’s nose when Joe and some nurses came running in with the doctor.
A nurse pushed Nkem aside and quickly replaced the mask she had pulled out while another noticed the abnormally in the ventilator knobs and rushed to adjust them.
Mama lay still at once, not making any move or showing any reactions.
“What have you done you wïtch! Did you have to kïll the poor woman?” Joe screamed, pushing her with so much anger, she staggered so bãdly.
And if Jackie hadn’t been watching her friend, if she hadn’t been too concerned about her welfare and chose to stand guard over her, Nkem would have had a big fall.
Jackie caught her almost a little too late. Nkem fell on the other side of the room, but not with much force because Jackie’s intervention had broken the fall. She forced herself up, but the Joe who saw his mother lying lifeless, was already over her, giving her slaps after slaps
