Mandy and her daughter were worried about how things seemed to have suddenly taken a new twist.
Joe was preoccupied with seeing his mother recover and wasnβt sparing a moment to listen to Faridaβs cries about needing money for something urgent she claimed to do.
βFarida, I donβt want to believe you arenβt concerned about my predicament right now.
βMy mother is battling to stay alive and Iβm so embattled because of all that happened while I have been staying away from her, and all you care about is what you wish to do with money?
βMy cheque book is at home and Iβm not planning to leave here until my mother wakes upβ Joe said in irritation.
βWow! So Iβm now the devΓ¬l? You think Iβm unconcerned about your mother just because I need money to take care of myself?
βI have been having pains in my pelvic region since the day the rΓ²bbers invaded our home, and mum suggested I saw a gynaecologist to ensure nothing goes wrong with this pregnancy, and youβre screΓ ming at me?
βNo problems. Letβs all sit besides your mother and wait for her to wake up. Perhaps when she wakes up to find my pregnancy gone, itβll make her healthierβ Farida said, forcing a sob.
βWhat! Youβve been having pains for the past two days and you didnβt bother to talk about it?
βWhat is wrong with you Farida? Do you want to kΓ―ll me? How can you be joking with my hope of being a father?β Joe asked, exasperated.
Farida walked out of the hospital ward crying and complaining about how he always put his motherβs interest above her interest and how she was worried about the fate of her unborn child.
βI wonder what would happen to my child when itβs born! With your mother doing so much to ensure she pushes me out of your house, even before my child is born, I wonder what would become of this innocent baby that your mother doesnβt wish is born safelyβ Farida said.
βOh come on baby, you know how important this child is to me, and how for itβs sake I can go to the moon and back.
βMy mother isnβt trying to push you or my child away. She knows youβre the one giving us the hope of holding my child, so she wonβt dare try to wish you were sent away from my house.
βAnd to imagine that she could go against my child is prepΓ²sterous my dear. She wants the baby more than I do, and thatβs why sheβs falling for Nkemβs game of being pregnant.
βI spoke with your mother yesterday, and she even had to call a certain someone, the person that helped Nkem prepare the pregnancy test results she gave me the other day, to show me what Nkem was up to.
βDo not assume I donβt know what Iβm doing Farida. There are a whole lot going on that you do not know, and I’m only being cool for now because your mother gave me a very wise suggestion on how to go about this
βYour mother and I were together when a guy seated next to us in a bar was telling his friend on the phone about how his luck has shone so brightly, and how rich he was going to be soon
βThe idiΓ²t was talking so excitedly and loudly about how a woman had hired him to bang her non stop for the period of time she wanted him to, just to ensure that she fell pregnant for realβ Joe told Farida.
βWait, donβt tell me a married woman can go to that length to get pregnant?
βAnd does it mean Nkem forged the pregnancy results? If she did, Is she not as dΓͺspicable as the other woman you overhead the man talking about?
βA woman who can deceive her husband into believing sheβs pregnant is as bad as one who is cheating on her husband, if you ask meβ Farida said.
βWell, what if the two women are just one person? What if itβs Nkem that forged the pregnancy results and has been sleeping with that cursed guy, just to get pregnant?β Joe asked Farida.
βNo ways! Itβs just not possible! How can she do that? Look Joe, I know I havenβt been the closest to her in recent times, but that wonβt make me agree that she can do something as disgΓ»sting as you have just said.
βWhy would she decide to cheat to get pregnant? What would give her the assurance that sheβd get pregnant by sleeping with a random guy?β Farida asked, feigning shock.
βFarida, do you think I would easily let the guy go away, when I heard him mention my name in his phone conversation?
βI got a hold of the dude, and just a little offer got him singing like a canary. I offered him a thousand dollars and he told me all I wanted to hear.
βHe told me how my wife found out that rhesus factor wonβt let her get pregnant for me so she had to hire him to do the deed.
βAnd so, any moment from now, she could come up truly pregnant for the guy, and try to make me accept the pregnancy as mineβ Joe told Farida who kept screΓ ming in supposed shock.
βSo you see what I mean when I said youβre my only hope of being a father? Nkem can never get pregnant for me,and I do not intend to get another wife, j don’t have the strength to withstand the trΓ²ubles in polygamy.
βAnd do you also understand why we canβt blame my mother because sheβs just despΓͺrate to have a child she can call her grandchild?β Joe asked Farida.
βI understand. Iβm just too worried about your mother and how much Nkem had indoctrinated her.
βShe used to be a very firm and upright woman until the day Nkem moved out of your house. I really canβt help but keep wondering what she did or said to Mama to make her change so drastically.
βI just hope she doesnβt get mama to do some other dirty deeds for her. All I want is to give birth to my baby and bear you more sons, I donβt want any problemsβ Farida said, clutching her stomach as she spoke.
Joe looked at how she seemed to still be in pains, thought of his mother that had been lying unconscious for over two days, but decided to rush home to sign her the cheque she wanted him to sign.
He gave her the cheque and wanted to run back to the hospital, but Farida suddenly felt cramp pains in her thigh and needed him to help her massage the leg.
One thing led to another, and he was begging her to allow him make love to her.
βI promise to be gentle Farida, Iβm so on fire, and I know I wonβt be able to think straight if I don’t get this urge satiated.
βPlease baby, I promise to buy you a beautiful gift on my way home later tonight, please just allow me, my loveβ Joe begged until Farida allowed him.
She was smiling in her heart as she recalled how she had planned with her mother to keep Joe away from the hospital to enable her put the old woman off
The doctor had told Farida that Mama was beginning to respond to treatment and should be able to talk to them in a few hours, so the mother and daughter decided to act fast.
Farida had thought her mother was going extreme with the plans to eliminate the woman, but her mother had been furious with her, asking her if she wanted to spoil everything they had already worked for.
βThereβs no way around it Farida. Max, your stΕ«pid boyfriend was mΓ d enough to say the things he said to that womanβs hearing.
βIf she wakes up and tells her son anything, then all our efforts will go to naught. She just has to go.
βTake Joe away and keep him out of the hospital and allow me do what I have to do!β Mandy had told her daughter.
And so while Joe humpèd and hummed in his room, Mandy was walking into the private hospital ward where his mother was still lying unconscious, to do her dìrty work.
