SEASON 1:
I remember taking a walk one day and returning only to find Donald crying and drinking heavily. I looked around and saw that he had taken six bottles already and still didn’t stop at that. I snatched the bottle from him and asked if he would like to talk about what was going on with him and before I could say anything more, Donald began to pour everything out. I kept on pacifying him till I heard him say he was HIV positive. I became stiff at that instant, of course, I wasn’t ready to be a carrier of HIV.
Immediately I heard, I walked away from him and into my room. I burst into tears and refused to listen to the voice of the Holy Spirit, will HIV be my lot after keeping myself for years? At that point, I decided enough was enough, I have suffered enough from Donald, and being infected with HIV wasn’t something I would want for myself.
Before daybreak the following morning, I picked up some of my things and left the house. I left a letter for him stating that I could not continue with the marriage and promised to send him the divorce papers so that we would both be free from the marriage binding us, at least, there was no love between us.
My mind was made up, I was ready to go against my father, and I was ready to get a divorce even if he was not going to support it.
I went to a hotel and paid for one week, I just wanted to be alone to think about the way forward. I switched off my cell phone because I didn’t want anyone to make me change my mind, I even refused to pray because I knew what God would say. On the third day, I had a terrible dream, in the dream, Donald died and the other man I got married to was worse than Donald.
As I woke up, I began to cry and asked the Holy Spirit for mercy, I asked for strength to bear the situation because it was definitely beyond me. It was there the Holy Spirit asked me to go back home to my husband and win his soul for Christ as he was ready for harvest.
I checked out of the hotel that day and on getting home, I met Donald trying to commit suicide, he had already tied the rope to the ceiling fan and was ready to kill himself. I had to scream at him, my scream brought him to the ground and at that point, I preached Christ to him. Surprisingly, Donald accepted Christ without stress after which he slept off. There was this joy in my heart, it was unexplainable. I covered him with the duvet and went to prepare a delicious meal for him.
That was the beginning of a new dawn in my marriage. I began to teach Donald the word of God and in a short while, he grew spiritually. As a birthday gift, I gave him ten million naira to start a new business which he appreciated greatly. The love and happiness I desired in my marriage came like a rushing wind, Donald began to pamper me but then, I learned the place of taking charge of my home through prayers.
When Donald’s business began to boom, those girls began to come one by one wanting to become his side chicks. Before I would have fought them but I understood that there are battles we can only fight on our knees, so, when they come, I would entertain them but I always use prayers to send them away. Donald was bold enough to tell them that he was sorry for the wasted years but he was ready to become the responsible man he had never been.
I remember the night Donald woke me up, I looked at the wall clock and saw that it was 2 am, the next thing I saw was Donald prostrating and asking me for forgiveness. At that point, I erased every wrong from my heart and decided to join hands with him to make our home a happy one.
That night I allowed Donald to sleep with me without protection, I got infected with HIV but the Holy Spirit kept saying God’s hands are upon me. I was supposed to be worried but Donald was, there was no day he won’t apologize for what he brought upon me but I will always tell him that old things have passed away.
I got pregnant two months later and gave birth to twins, one boy, and one girl. God was gracious to us because my children are both HIV-negative. I was so grateful to God when their HIV test result came out, Donald insisted we had them tested in three different hospitals and it all came out negative.
The reason Rita couldn’t penetrate my family was because we know how destructive eating anyhow could be so, we don’t do it and that was how I trained my children. Today, my twins are doing well in a private University in the UK.
