π€· The Fallen Angel Chapter Seven:
Our marriage preparations were moving on smoothly. I was hoping that sooner or later, my marriage to Ariel would come to be. Lilian and her mum however, had other plans. I had taken Ariel to my village and showed her to my mum and dad. They had asked about her family but she had not been able to produce them. She lied that she was an orphan and had grown in an orphanage but my mum would have none of that. She had insisted that until she sees members of Arielβs family, there would be no wedding.
Meanwhile, in Lilianβs home, she and her mum were having a discussion on how to send Ariel away and free me.
βI will send her back from where she came from.β Lilianβs mother was saying. βShe came from the sea and that is exactly where she will be going.β
βHow do you intend to do that, mum?β Lilian asked.
βThe secrets of the underworld must remain secret, my daughter. Just leave everything to me. No matter what happens, be rest assured that that wedding will not happen.β
βYou mean she will go back to the sea like literally? Is such a thing possible?β Lilian was persistent.
βYes, she will. Donβt worry daughter. Let me tell you a story. Many years ago, while I was still a kid, we had this neighbour who gave birth to a child. The child was very beautiful but her purpose on earth was to torture and eventually kill her parents. Every time her parents came into any money, she would fall sick and was taken to the hospital. She would stay in hospital until her parents had spent all their money. A lot of other mishaps and mysterious things were happening to the poor, unfortunate couple.
βOne day, the woman went to see a spiritualist and she was told that her child was not a normal child. She was told her child was from the river and had to be sent back before she caused further harm. The spiritualist told her what to do and promised that the child would return back to the river if she did exactly as she was told.
βThe next day, the woman took the child to the river bank and abandoned her there. She walked for about ten minutes, rounded a corner and hid behind a large tree and waited to see what would happen. The child, realizing that she had been abandoned wept and wept but her mum did not come for her. After about an hour, when the child was sure that no one would come for her and she had actually been abandoned, she took a careful look around the surrounding bushes to make sure no one was around. When she was sure that no one was watching her, to her motherβs horror, she transformed into a huge python and slithered into the river and was never seen again.β
βJesus Christ!!!β Lilian exclaimed. βThat was one hell of a horror story, mum.β
βBut it was true, my daughter. Donβt worry, everything will work out perfectly.β
Ariel and I had been having series of quarrels because of my parentβs objection to our marriage. Ariel was becoming impatient and, in her mind, she had decided that she would force me into marriage even if my parents didnβt give their approval. One night, after a serious quarrel, Ariel went to sleep. In her dream, she saw Lilianβs mum and the latter gave her a needle to swallow. After she had swallowed the needle, she woke up from the dream and started coughing out blood. I who was sleeping right beside her was alarmed and wanted to take her to the hospital, but she refused.
That was the beginning of Arielβs torture. Every night, in her dreams, Lilianβs mother attacked her and she found it difficult to fight back. One particular night, Lilianβs mum took her into a dark river and tried to drown her. She fought viciously but could not free herself. Finally, she transformed into a fish and swam away. She woke up from the dream sweating and panting. Another day, while sleeping, Lilianβs mum came to her in the form of a ghoul. They fought for a long time and that night would have been the end of her. However, at the last moment, realizing that her end was near, she freed her spirit from her body in order to avoid the pains. When she did that, Lilianβs mother let her go.
That day, she decided that her mission with me was over. She decided that she would go back to the sea and never return. However, she was obsessed with me and didnβt want to let go. Self-preservation however, is always at the top of everyoneβs agenda. She knew her continuous stay in my house would be terrible for her.
One night, while I was asleep, she left a note on the nightstand and went out of the house, locking the door behind her. I was not yet asleep, saw the note, read it and immediately followed her. In the note, she had bid me farewell and had decided to return to the sea. Because I was still under her spell, I didnβt want to lose her and ran after her, begging her to come back.
βJames, please go back to your house. I am a sea folk, Jim. I came to your world to find love but I have to go back now.β
βBut you have found me, Ariel, you have found love.β
βI am sorry, Jim. Please, go back. I live in the sea and you live on land. Our lives are different.β
βAriel, please donβt go. We can talk about this. I love you.β
βI donβt love you, Jim. I am just obsessed with you. I cannot love anybody. Please go to your fiancΓ©e. Goodbye.β
She had reached the edge of the sea now. As soon as her feet touched the water, she turned around and took one last look at me. Then she spoke.
βYou think you love me Jim, but you donβt. You will realize how much you hate me when I release you from my spell.β
As she said that a white, shiny and transparent image of me left her and moved back towards me. As it reached where I was standing, it opened itβs arms wide and moved into me. I screamed like someone who had been electrocuted. Then, my senses came back and I realized I was at the sea shore, chasing a demon. I got so frightened that I retraced my steps and ran back all the way home.
As I ran, away, Ariel stood knee-deep in the water and watched me with sad tears in her eyes. She stood in the water for almost a minute more, as if contemplating whether to go back or not. Before her mind could be made up, another girl came up from the see. Her eyes were as shiny as diamonds and her hair was gold. She held her hand and together, they moved into the sea and were never seen again.
THE ENDβ¦!!!
