π€¦ The Devil I Became Chapter Seven:
Mikeβs Village was very traditional. There was a cult called Achakanta. It was made of the very old people in the village. Most of these old men were wizards. Women were not allowed into the cult. When ever the cult was making its outing, all the women always stayed indoors. Any woman who sees them in action would be barren for life. In spite of the fact that it was a wizardry cult, their intentions were good. Their main goal was to protect the village from external evil.
Once every month, at the dead of night, these men go out in their spiritual forms and move all around the village. They move around, singing and dancing to strange songs. No one was allowed to see them on such nights, even males. It was during one of these outings that the Achakanta men were surprised to see a strange figure, bent double in front of the hospital gate, attempting to burry something. The men hurried to where the figure was and before it could escape, it was caught. It was Mike.
Mikeβs desperations had forced him to visit another native doctor who had asked him to get a completely white cat and burry at the center of town. Sleeping with his mother didnβt change anything as his late sisterβs ghost became more violent than ever. He was given a day and time to do it.
Unfortunately for Mike, the day he was given, coincided with the outing of the Achakanta. He was caught and seriously beaten. The Achakanta were going to kill him when he begged for his life and promised he would confess if they gave him a chance.
The cult leader, an old grizzly man accepted that he should be spared for the time being and they should hear what he had to say. Mike narrated everything. From the beginning to the end. There was a general round of surprised shouts when he mentioned that he had slept with his mother.
βWhat? You slept with your mother? Abomination!!!β The cult leader shouted.
βI am sorry, please forgive me.β Mike was rolling on the ground sweating and begging for his life.
βWe cannot forgive you.β Another cult member said. βYour blood must be used to cleanse the land. This kind of a thing has never happened in our land before. You are a stranger to this village. Why would you come and desecrate other peoplesβ land like this?β
He unsheathed his well sharpened machete and was about to remove Mikeβs head. He was however, held back by the other cultists. They decided they would take Mike to his house to see his mum. They removed all his clothes and made him walk in front of them, whipping and cursing him as they went.
Mama Mike was woken by the loud noise in her compound. The cultists demanded that she opened the door immediately or face their wrath. As soon as she opened the door, she saw her son, Mike and it dawned on her that he had been caught and might have already confessed. The leader of the cult came forward and spoke.
βWoman, we have heard everything that happened. Your son has confessed already. Under normal circumstances, you and your son would be sacrificed to Achakanta this night. You people have seriously desecrated the land. Chaiiii!!! However, Achakanta is a merciful deity. Therefore, we have decided that you and your son and your entire family will be banished forever. You must you never come to this village again. If you do, you shall die instantly. Your properties will all be burnt. This is our judgement.β
That was the fate that befell Mike and his family. They were all dragged out of their house that same minute and exiled. However, they were barely out of their compound when the elders screamed and shut their eyes. They could not bare to see what was in front of them. Standing in front of everyone, making sure everyone could see her, was Akoβs ghost. She was looking sad. There were tears in her eyes and she was deathly pale. She spoke in an otherworldly voice.
βMike, you have brought disgrace to our home, to our family. You killed me just because of money. My children are now without their mum. For that reason, you will die.β She struck Mike with her hatchet and he fell on the ground and died instantly. She turned to the cultists.
βPlease, spare my mum and the rest of the family. Mike was the cause of all this. I have avenged my death, please elders, I beg of you.β She said in her guttural voice. Then she turned to her mum.
βMama, take care of yourself. I was given a little time to avenge my death. Now, I must go. My time is up. Luckily for me, I died a Christian. I will spend my eternity in peace. Anything I did after my death doesnβt count against me because I was already dead. Goodbye mama. Take care of my kids.β She said and vanished.
Mama Mike ran to where she was standing but it was too late. Ako had already gone. The elders made everyone present to swear that the rest of the villagers were never going to know what happened. Such a thing had never happened in that community before. Ako had felt comfortable to show her ghostly form because the men present were cultists. The rest of the village must remain in the dark about this.
Mikes, corpse was burnt and his ashes thrown into River Mondiba. I know you are wondering what happened to Akpan. He was smart, before the cultists could get to his house, he had escaped back to Nigeria and was never seen or heard from again.
So went the story of Mike. He got himself involved in a bloody trail and it cost him his life. Those of you who are wondering how I came about knowing the story, in spite of the fact that it was a sworn secret, well, Akoβs daughter who is now a grown and beautiful girl, told me the entire story. She narrated the story to me after I told her I was looking for a way to make quick money. I learnt from her story and I hope everyone who has read this story learns too. The wages of ritual money is untimely death.
THE END…!!!
