π€¦ The Devil I Became Chapter Six:
Mike was at a market in the next big town after the one he lived in. He had gone to restock his shop. He had finished shopping already, paid some guys to load his goods into his car, and then went to a restaurant to eat. He had just finished eating when Ako appeared in front of him.
He couldnβt believe his eyes. He screamed and ran out of the restaurant. Ako followed him, hatchet in hand. She seemed to be gliding instead of walking. Mike could not believe he was seeing his dead sister again. He was running from one end of the market to the other and to the natural eyes of everyone present, it was believed Mike had gone mad.
Bad news spreads like wildfire. Within an hour, news of Mikeβs manifestations had already reached his hometown. It was then then that Sandra, Mikeβs other sister realized that it was Mike who had killed Ako. She confronted Mark as soon as Mike got back.
βMike, please tell me. Do you have any hand in Akoβs death?β She asked, in tears.
βI donβt. Please why are you talking like that?β
βBecause of the way things are going around here. Your sudden riches, your strange behaviour, Ako dying as soon as you became rich. Mike, please tell me the truth.β
Mike could no longer tolerate his sisterβs pestering. He got up and left. He got into his car and went straight to Akpanβs house. He wanted to tell Akpan that he had been seeing his sisterβs spirit.
Akpan didnβt seem surprised. He told Mike not to worry. He gave mike some concoctions and asked him to spray them around the house. He promised Mike the concoctions would keep Akoβs ghost away. However, nothing worked. Each time Mike closes his eyes, Ako would appear. Sometimes Ako appeared only in places where there was a crowd, just to embarrass Mike.
The whole village had started talking. People were now beginning to understand the source of Mikeβs sudden and overnight riches. They were now beginning to be afraid of him. Mike, who was once very bulky, became very pale and haggard. He was always looking over his shoulders. He couldnβt sleep. He was suffering from serious sleep deprivation. Ako didnβt allow him to sleep at night. The only time he could manage to sleep was in the day.
Mike decided to hire some boys to stay with him all night. He paid them to play cards with him just so that he wonβt fall asleep. He succeeded to be at peace for a while then Ako started appearing randomly even in the day. Mike could no longer bear it and he decided to seek the help of a powerful native doctor in the neighbouring village.
βYou Killed your sister.β The native doctor said as soon as Mike approached the entrance to his shrine.
βI did, Baba. How did you know?β Mike asked, surprised. The negative doctor ignored his question.
βYour sister wants your head and she will have it, yes, she will. She was innocent. Her blood cries every day. She will not rest until she exacts her revenge on you.β
βThatβs why I am here, Baba.β Mike said desperately. βIs there nothing we can do? Is there nothing we can do to chain or appease her spirit?β
The native doctor pondered for a while. He threw some cowries on the floor, uttered some incantations, looked up to the sky and then shook his head sadly.
Mike was impatient. The native doctor spoke again.
βYou have to sleep with your mother. You must sleep with your mother. She must accept willingly. If she doesnβt accept willingly, nothing will work. After you have slept with your mother, your sisterβs ghost will stop tormenting you.β
βAre you sure about this, Baba?β Mike asked.
βYes, I am sure. Now go and do as you are told and you will be free.β
Mike paid him and left. He was wondering how he was going to convince his mother to sleep with him. However, while he was away at the native doctorβs place, Sandra had confessed to their mother how she went to Oku and brought a charm that resurrected Akosβs ghost. He told her Mike was responsible for her death and Mike was going to die. Mikeβs mother was deeply grieved and the memory of her dead daughter once again flooded her heart and she wept uncontrollably.
Mikeβs mum had another trouble worrying her. Not only was her daughter, Ako killed by her son, Mike, Sandra, her other daughter had told her Akoβs ghost was on the loose and was going to kill Mike. She didnβt want to lose another child. Her only son for that matter. That was why she wasnβt as mad as she should have been with Mike when he came home. Instead, she wept and wept and asked Mike why he did it. Mike told her he was misled and begged for her forgiveness. He however, told her there was a more serious trouble at hand.
βMama, there is a serious trouble. I went to a native doctor to ask him to send Akoβs spirit away and he said the only way that could be possible is if I sleep with you.β Mike said in tears.
βWhat??β Mama Mike shouted. βAre you mad?β
βI am not mad, Mama. But that is what might befall me. In fact, I will die if I donβt do it.β
βJesus Christ!! My son, what have you gotten yourself into? I can never do that. Its abomination. Itβs sacrilege. God forbids!!β
βMama, then be prepared to lose another child, your only son. This is the end of me, Mama. You think I want to do this? You think I am happy to do this? It is the only way. If I donβt do this, I will die. I might not even survive the night. Akoβs spirit is all over the place and she is fierce. She has already threatened to kill me. She almost killed me this morning. Please mum, please.β
βThen be prepared to die. I can never do it.
Goodbye.β Mama Mike said and stomped out.
Mike was desperate. He went into his bedroom and locked himself in. He was weeping seriously and knew he wasnβt going to survive the night. About four hours later, he was startled when he heard a knock at the door. He asked who it was and it was his mum. He let her in. She came forward and knelt on the floor.
βI have given a thought to it and I donβt want to lose another child. So, I will make the sacrifice, my son. I will sleep with you.”
