βSettle what amicably?β Mama Etaka shouted. βWe are not settling anything amicably. My daughter has been assaulted, r@ped and you are here talking about amicable settlement? Mike has to pay. He has to pay. I will take the matter to the competent authorities. He has to be dealt with.β
The elder sat down calmly and another elder stood up. He walked towards Mama Etaka and asked that she followed him to a corner so that they could have a tΓͺte a tΓͺte. She obliged.
βWoman, we feel your pain. What Mike did was very bad. Actually, had he done that to my daughter, I would have castrated him myself. However, you know how powerful Mike is because of the money he has made. Most of the policemen in this community are his friends. They wonβt take the matter seriously. He hangs out with all the powerful men in town. So, please letβs look for a means to settle it at home.β He said at length.
Mama Etaka started crying. She wished her husband was alive. Etaka was her only daughter, her only child and meant a lot to her. She was helpless and powerless. The elder continued.
βHe has asked me to give you 500,000. Take the money and let this end, please woman.β
He handed the money to her and they moved back to the living room. In true African community style, Mike was asked to formally apologize. He did. He also promised never to involve himself in such an act again. He promised to take care of Etakaβs bills too. Two hours later everyone left and Mama Etaka went back to the hospital to be with her daughter.
It’s been a year now. Etaka was fine now and she and her mum had moved from that compound. Mike was doing fine and people had already begun to forget that he had r@ped a minor. His business was doing ok and he hadnβt heard from Akpan in a long while. Everything seemed to be going well. One day, Mike was in his shop when his phone rang. He checked and it was Akpan. Vexed, he answered the call.
βAkpanβ
βMikeβ
βWhat is it this time? I thought I had already settled you?β Mike asked, vexed.
βNot so fast, Mike. The Source is like the world of the dead. He is never satisfied. As I speak, he is demanding something from you.β Akpan said, laughing.
βThis is not funny, Akpan. Please, stop laughing. What does he want again?β Mike asked, sweating.
βHe wants you to give him a goat.β
βThen, thatβs not a problem. How much does a goat cost?β
βNot just any type of goat. He wants a goat without fur on its body.β Akpan explained.
βI have never seen a goat like that. Where do you think I can find one?β Mike asked, puzzled.
βHe wants a human sacrifice. It has to be someone from your blood. A family member. He has made you rich beyond your wildest imagination. You are now a big boy in town. Please, do your part.β
βJesus Christ!!β Mike shouted. βI canβt do that.β
βThen be prepared to pay the price. You have just one month. The Source usually, doesnβt give that much time to people. However, you seem to be special. He seems to like you.β
Akpan said, laughing loudly. He seemed to be enjoying himself.
βYou demon from the pit of hell.β Mike said. βYou are enjoying my pain.β
βBe careful how you speak, Mike. The source is waiting for your compliance. You have just a month, remember? You have just used ten minutes of the time. Goodbye and wish you all the luck. Enjoy your money.β Akpan said and dropped the call.
Mike stood sweating. He was furious and for the first time since he made money, he genuinely regretted why he got himself involved in money rituals. However, you are never told everything at the beginning. Had he known it would come to this extent, he would never have gotten himself involved. He curzed himself for being so greedy and hasty in life. Now, it has come to the point where he has to sacrifice a human being; a family member. His own blood. No way!!
He thought of his mother. Could she be the one? No, he shrugged. Not his mother; a woman who bore him and had taken care of him all his life. He thought of his brothers. They could be the right choice; one of them. However, people will start suspecting.
He had a sister. She was married but had recently divorced. Her husband had been threatening to kill her if she didnβt come back to him. He smiled to himself. This could be the answer. This is the only way he could kill someone without drawing any suspicions to himself. If he kills his sister, everyone will think it was her husband. After all, has he not been threatening her?
Nevertheless, she was his sister. His youngest sister. Jesus!!! How did he get himself into this? However, he had no other choice. Itβs his life or hers. Whatβs better than oneβs own life? He decided he will kill her. Her name was Ako. Poor Ako will have to be the one. No one will suspect. But how about her kids? They are still young. Who will take care of them? He has money. He could hire a baby sitter, a nanny, a house help, anything. He will give her children all the love and comfort they need, but their mum has to go. It was a hard decision. But there was no other way.
He took his phone and dialed Akpanβs number. The first ring had no answer and so did the second and the third. The fourth ring, and Akpan answered.
βI have decided to kill my sister.β Mike said.
