Mama Etaka had sent Etaka to go fetch water early that morning from the stream. Mama Etaka was Mike’s neighbour and Mike had overheard her telling small Etaka to go fetch water from a nearby stream. Etaka was only eleven years and under normal circumstances, she wasn’t supposed to be sent to the stream alone. However, her mum didn’t see any need to be worried because she had had been going to that stream all alone ever since she could walk.
Mike knew this was his opportunity. He dashed into his bedroom and took the white ritual towel that was given to him by Akpan. He locked his door behind him and hurried towards the direction of the stream. When he got to a big tree that was close to the road leading to the stream, he hid behind it and laid ambush.
Poor, unsuspecting, beautiful Etaka was on her way to the stream, singing happily to her self when Mike emerged from his hiding place.
“Good morning, Uncle Mike.” She greeted.
“Good morning my dear.” Mike replied. “I can see you are going to fetch water.”
“Yes, uncle. My mum said I should hurry and come back fast.”
“That’s good. Please come and take this my small bottle and help me fetch water too.” Mike said.
Etaka walked towards him and as soon as she was close enough, he grabbed her and pull her into the bush. Etaka couldn’t understand what was happening. She was young and naïve and she also trusted Uncle Mike. This explains why she didn’t scream.
“What’s the problem, Uncle?” She asked, surprised.
“Shhhhhhh!!! Stay quiet. I want us to play a little game.” Mike said.
“But my mum is waiting for me. We can play later, let me just go.” She begged.
Mike refused. He pinned her to the ground, shifted her panties and started rubbing the immature hairs on her private. Etaka tried to free herself when he put his finger in her because it hurt terribly. However, Mike was of course stronger than her and she couldn’t. Then, Mike remembered that Akpan had told him that he must be caught in the act or the ritual won’t work.
Mike pulled the naked, little Etaka to the middle of the road, spread her little legs wide and entered her with force and brutality. She screamed and shouted and scratched and bit him, all to no avail. She was oozing out blood but Mike didn’t care. Some ten minutes later, he was done. He got up from her and used thetowel to clean her. He then folded the bloodstained towel and put it in a small bag he brought with him. Etaka still laid there, weeping softly. She was in terrible pains. As Mike went back to her to carry her, he was seen by some people going to the stream. They rushed towards him and he fled into the bush.
Mama Etaka was wondering why Etaka had taken so long to come back from the stream. She had already prepared a whip for her when she returns. She was startled when she saw a group of women and some young men walking into her compound. One of them was carrying Etaka in her hands. She was bloodied. He mum screamed and rushed towards them.
“What happened to my daughter? What happened to her?” She asked in tears.
“She was r@ped, Ma. We found her on the road to the stream and discovered that she had been raped by Mike.” One of the young men replied.
“Jesus Christ!!” She exclaimed. ‘My poor daughter, Etaka. Please give her to me.”
Etaka was handed to her.
“Mike you will not go free.” She shouted. “You will pay for this terrible act you have done to my poor daughter. A child who trusted you and took you as family. You had the guts, the temerity to shamelessly assault her. Mike, Mike, Mike. I curse you.” Mama Etaka was really worked up now. She had put Etaka on the floor and she herself was rolling on the ground and crying. The women tried to calm her down to no avail.
One concerned woman came forward and proposed that Etaka should be taken to the hospital immediately for a proper medical checkup. The other woman agreed and since her mum was still inconsolable, they cleaned her up and took her to the nearest hospital. Mama Etaka only joined them later.
Mama Etaka was in the doctor’s office as she waited for the doctor’s report.
“Mam, your daughter was sexually assaulted. She was raped. However, all is not lost. She has sustained serious injuries but her womb is intact. She will still be able to give birth when she comes of age.” The doctor explained.
Etaka’s mum was partially relieved. Now that her daughter was out of immediate danger, the next target was to hunt down Mike. She said her thanks to the doctor, went to the cashier and paid her bill and then proceeded to Etaka’s word.
“The doctor said you will be fine, Ok?” She told Etaka, in tears.
“Yes, Mum,” Etaka said mildly. She was still in shock.
Mama Etaka begged one of the women to stay with her daughter at the hospital while she went home. As soon as she got to her compound, she was shocked to see Mike and some elders waiting in front of her house. As soon as Mike saw her, he went on his knees and started begging.
Mama Etaka lunged at him and started beating and heaping curses on him. There was total pandemonium. The elders and all the other people around knelt down and begged Mama Etaka to no avail. Finally, they were able to calm her down. She was however, still weeping bitterly.
Some twenty minutes later, she was fully calm. They all moved into her living room and sat down, except for Mike was remained on his knees. One of the elders rose to speak.
“Mama Etaka, we have come to see how we can settle this amicably.” He said.
