π«π Romeo And Violet Chapter Six:
A few weeks after Violet and her family moved into the city, I went to meet her. I hadnβt really talked to her since the last day we met at our house with her family. Her elder brother and his wife worked at the mission hospital, so, it was easy for me to locate them, since they lived in the mission compound in the city. There was network in the city and a friend of mine had been able to get Violetβs number for me. I called her and she agreed that we meet.
βViolet, glad to meet you again.β I began as soon as we were seated at a popular bar in town called Bamboo Bar.
βOn the contrary, I am not glad to meet you. You are a very bad boy.β
βBad boy? What have I done?β I asked, bewildered.
βYou have gotten me pregnant and now you are trying to turn things around. You are trying to deny it.β
βDonβt say that, Violet. I was ready to accept this pregnancy until things got complicated. There is talk of you already being pregnant before we met. What can you say about that?β
βWho told you? I wasnβt pregnant before I met you. That is just a smear campaign to disrepute me and make me look bad. Your mum is the one leading the campaign.β She said, angrily.
βNever you accuse my mum of such a thing. My mum missed her calling. She was supposed to be police. She is very good at investigating and she has her sources, reliable sources.β
βI donβt care. Your mum hates me. She doesnβt just find me worthy for a daughter in law. I am sure itβs because I havenβt continued schooling after my primary education.β She said in anger.
βDonβt say that! Donβt say that! My mum doesnβt make choices for me. I chose you and if I was convinced or let me say, if I am convinced that the baby you are carrying in your stomach is mine, I will gladly accept. But as it stands now, things donβt add up. You said you were four months pregnant. My mumβs investigations proved that you are six months pregnant. Yesterday, my mum came to the city with an update. She said according to her friend who is a midwife at the maternity in the village, you are eight months pregnant. That means you will be putting to bed anytime soon, and that makes sense because you already look so developed.β I narrated.
She sat quiet. I continued.
βIf everything is true, means you had been sleeping with someone else before we met. Now, tell me. Did you continue to sleep with him after you and I had met me?β
βNevertheless!!β She exclaimed. βI havenβt met with anyone since I started sleeping with you.β
βWhat do you mean by βnevertheless? Thatβs wrong English. βNeverthelessβ doesnβt me βnoβ. You use that word when you are trying to give another side to a point.β I was correcting her English in spite of the tense situation.
βI beg, leave me alone. I am not as educated as you. At least you understood what I said.β
βOkay, I will be leaving now. It was a pleasure talking to you.β I said, getting up from my seat.
βYou are leaving enh? When you were spreading my legs from Oshodi to Obutemeta you didnβt make any complaints. Now that it has happened, you are trying to run away from your responsibility.β She was fuming so much that she drew the attention of everyone at the bar.
She was so mad that I decided to excuse myself and quietly walk away. However, she got up from her chair and blocked my way. To avoid any further embarrassment, I decided to sit down. After I had seated down, she continued.
βNow, listen to me. Forget about all those your stories. This child is yours and nothing can change that. If your mum likes, let her become an FBI agent for all I care. Nothing will change.β
She got up from her seat, and in classic βstubborn girl styleβ, poured her remaining drink on my head and left.
A week later, she put to bed. I was informed by one of their new neighbours who happened to be someone I knew. She delivered a baby boy, and it was highly rumored that the child was my exact replica. I refused to believe and concluded that the brains of the people who saw the resemblance needed to be formatted.
I didnβt spend a dime to prepare for the coming of the child. That was because the pregnancy was highly disputed. There were new rumours that she had other boys in the village, aside from her main village guy, and any of them could have been responsible for the pregnancy.
In my school, the information had already filtered in that my girlfriend has just put to bed. Everyone started calling me βPa Boyβ. Some people called me βResponsible Manβ. Back in the village, it was a general topic of discussion. Everyone thought the child was mine. That was the narrative her brotherβs wife had made in the village before they were transferred to town, and it had spread widely.
However, it is said that in every dark cloud, there is a silver lining. It was the rumours in the village that helped to unravel the mystery of the pregnancy. Village people by nature know a lot about each other. They could be stingy with you in every aspect but not information. Someone who knew about Violetβs pregnancy heard that I was being held responsible for it became very angry and decided to come to our house to reveal something none of us knew about. I was never to know something like that had transpired until my mother paid another visit the city.
βResponsible man, how are you?β My mom said. I know she was making fun of me.
βMom, please, stop it.β I said, laughing.
βYou came close to being a dad. However, the whole truth has been revealed.β
βWhat do you mean, mom? I donβt understand.β
βYou were not the one responsible for Violetβs pregnancy. It had been a setup all along.β
βWhat? Who is responsible then?β I was very anxious.
βWhen you met her, she was already four months pregnant. However, you didnβt know. I canβt blame you for that, you are still naΓ―ve and young. You went and was arranging someoneβs baby.β She laughed.
βStop it, mom.β I said in mock reproach. βSo, tell me. Who is responsible?β
βTheir neighbour. When they discovered that she was pregnant, by then she was just two months gone, they interrogated her, and she revealed that she had been sleeping with their highly promiscuous married neighbour. Her elder brother and his wife then confronted the neighbour and he accepted. However, he was an important man in the village and wanted to save his reputation. So, he bribed Violetβs parents, and they convened a meeting and told her she would have to look for someone to pin the pregnancy on. They were all in on the conspiracy.β
βOMG!! Mom, thatβs how I came into the story.β
βYes, my poor son. They conspired against you as you too could not control that your thing. You fell for the trap and you were held responsible.β My mum concluded.
I was confused.
βSo, mom, it doesnβt add up. Why all the fuss and all the meetings they were having with us?β I asked my mom.
βIt was all a faΓ§ade. They were just pretending. You are free now. Concentrate on your upcoming exams and keep your willy in your zipper. Next time, you wonβt escape so easily.β My mom advised.
βSo, what have they done to the man who is responsible for her pregnancy?β I asked.
βThat is their business. The story is everywhere. I will be very happy if his wife peppers him. He is very notorious. I hear he sleeps with all the girls around, even his house helps. Now, go and get me a glass of water.β
Everything now made sense to me. Her falling for me so easily, the fact that her brother kept refusing to be at our meetings, the fact that she claimed that her parents were not bothering her about the pregnancy, though it was already fully developed. It all made sense now.
I promised myself that I was going to see her one last time. I wanted to see that her beautiful but lying face. However, that was not to be, the rumour about her being pregnant for a married man spread so wide that her parents asked her elder brother to send her to his own village. She left the following week, even before I could arrange a meeting with her. Itβs been nineteen years now and I have never seen her again.
THE END…!!!
