I stepped out of the company’s compound gate sad, depressed, broken and empty.
With mountains of thoughts in my head, I walked slowly to avoid the onlookers.
I noticed my legs couldn’t carry my body again, and I didn’t want to be “a thing of pity” on the road.
I tuck sit beside a flower in front of an attachment house along the road.
Facing down to avoid different reactions of people
**. thinking of the miseries that had befallen me within a short period of my stay in Lagos, made me cry so much despite sitting on the road.
I tried as much as I could to reduce it, but my voice was so audible as I was gasping for air.
I sat there for a while before trying to figure out what to do with my life.
As I struggled to get to my feet, I noticed a total was watching me from the other side of the road.
He crossed to where I was immediately I stood up.
He asked me how I was, and before I could control myself and respond to him.
He abrupted. “it’s fine, it’s fine”, he said holding me by the hand.
At that moment I needed a companion, so I couldn’t abjure.
I didn’t say anything to him, as he kept repeating “it will be well, you don’t have to kill yourself”, “cheer up, bigger and better are coming”.
It was as if he knew what condition I was in before raining this sweet words of life to my dead soul.
He walked me down to the bus-stop and asked if I could find my way from there.
I responded with a nodd of head.
He promised to wait for me on the same street the next day to see me. ” I wish he understood I wasn’t gonna come back”. I soliloquize.
He was smart enough to ask for my number, and I didn’t scruple to give out.
He bid me good bye and I left.
He watched me enter the cap and moved before he went back.
**. I thought about him for a while, he was handsome tho, and I needed a companion at that moment, so I didn’t mind if a cockroach came my way.
**. **. **. **. **. **.
I got to my house weak and exhausted.
It was like they removed my last strength from me.
I tripped flat on my bed not minding if I will scrape my body on the hard surface of the bed frame.
I soaked my pillow with tears as it was my only solace for the moment.
I rolled from one edge of the bed to the other praying for sleep to come, but it didn’t come.
I went to the kitchen to take some water, when I got there. Different thoughts watered my broken mind and I picked a knife to end my life.
I held the knife right upwards and facing my stomach ready to stab.
“I thought of my poor parents I left in Porthacourt promising to make them proud”.
“I thought of my little siblings wandering the streets of Porthacourt”.
” They all needed me and I couldn’t leave them”.
” I thought of my beautiful future I have sketched out”.
” I thought of another life after the sorrow I was in”.
My head wagged and I collapsed with the knife in my hands.
I woke to a severe migraine, I sat up and lean my back to the fridge door until I was able to think straight.
I went to the bathroom to take a shower, I bathed myself in the cold shower, immersing my whole head so the water could cool my scull.
I felt really better and relieved as I lay on my bed facing the colored chandelier in my room.
I was about to enter another phase of intense thoughts when a call from the office got me distracted.
I thought of picking the call, but “what would they say”.
“After sacking me, what more do they want? I murmured to myself.
The call came in two more times and I refused to pick, and it didn’t come again.
I slept without food as I didn’t feel any good for the day.
********************************
The next day came which was Tuesday, I got a call from Liberty at about 9:47am.
He asked me why I was not at work and I told him I was sacked.
He was so Furious that I didn’t mention it to him.
He ended the call and promised to call back.
*************
Another call came in from an unknown number and I picked.
The guy on phone explained himself and he happened to be the stranger I met the other day.
We spoke for a while and I explained what was going on in my life to him.
He advised me to call the office back and know why they called.
I took his advice and ran to my call log to dial the number that called me the day before.
Immediately Liberty’s call came in, he asked me to come to the office immediately.
I was scared, I asked him what the problem was, but he ordered me to come with immediate effect.
I got dressed and rushed to work, on my way I received an email on my phone.
I opened it to check, it was a sack letter I got from my office, for skipping work for two days.
It became more interesting and I decided to get to the office to know the root of the problem.
I got to the office and the gate man denied me access.
I pleaded with him to let me in, but he refused with reasons that he might loose his Job.
After much pleading, he called on Liberty and he came, immediately he sighted me, he rushed up to us.
“Deborah what happened, what kind of risk did you take like that?
” To skip work and not inform anybody, even the boss”. He asked in shock.
I was short of words, I didn’t know what to say and where to start. Of course I got a sack letter from my boss. So what was Liberty talking about.
He instructed me to wait, while he went inside to plead with the manager and told him what happened.
On hearing that, the manager granted me access and invited me to the boss office.
We got there and I was so ashamed to look my boss in the eyes, as tears almost flowed from my eyes.
He asked me some questions and I answered.
He asked me for the sack letter note, and thank goodness, I took it along with me.
After reading it, he went mute for a while, as he too was shocked by what he saw.
He further asked me some personal questions and I answered accordingly.
That was when it got to his notice that Angela was behind everything.
Angela scripted everything and played over everyone’s senses in the office.

I became depressed as my boss couldn’t take me back because of my nonchalant way of handling issues in the office.
He was scared I may Jeopardize the company’s name.
I went back home with another heavy bomb released on me from the right source.
I wept uncontrollably.
