Perfect Romance π§‘
Clad in an Ankara gown, with a warm smile on her face, was the lady I had fought my best to eschew.
It was Folake.
She wore a graceful smile as she saw me, I could tell that there were a million and one butterflies in her belly, because she at once had a happy demeanor.
I felt like asking the cab driver to just drive away, but that would be very bad of me.
With so much hesitation, I hopped in.
“Dave,” she called my name in a very seductive fashion. She said it so softly, in a manner that could make you want to wrap your arms around her and bring her into a soft kiss.
But hell no!
There was no way I would do such with Folake, anyone but her.
“I didn’t see you in class today. In fact, I haven’t seen you for more than a week nowβ¦ What happened?” She asked, her peering eyes showed concern.
“Iβ¦I’ve been attending classes, we just didn’t see each other.”
Well that was because I was pretty slick and I had successfully prevented us from coming in contact. Only to enter the same taxi with her.
I felt a bit uncomfortable, especially when I noticed we were the only ones in the cab excluding the driver.
“David I’ve been very worried about you. I keep texting and calling you but you don’t pick my calls and you don’t respond to my messages.”
“Ehhβ¦umm⦔ I couldn’t find any excuse worthy enough to tell her.
“Actually, my phone is bad. Ummβ¦the screen has issues⦔
I lied and I just hoped she would buy it.
“But it looks perfectly ok to me,” Folake said, snatching my phone from me before I could even stop her.
“Uhhβ¦yes. I fixed it.”
“Hmm!” She sighed, a suspicious look lit up her face.
“So why didn’t you reply to my messages after you fixed your phone?” Disbelief was evident in her tone.
“Iβ¦I wanted to, I just didn’t have airtime.”
“Mmhmm. So where are you off to now? Probably to your girlfriend’s house.”
I chuckled.
“You know I don’t have a girlfriend,”
“And I’m supposed to believe that an intelligent and handsome guy like you doesn’t have a girlfriend? Spare me the lies please.”
I couldn’t hold back my laughter, it sounded funny to me.
“No dey whine me abeg,” I said amidst uncontrollable laughter.
“So where are you off to then?”
“I just want to get something to eat, I’m very hungry right now.”
“Hope you know you have to make it up to me?”
“Make it up to you? How? Why?”
“For not picking up my calls.”
“I don’t really get your point.”
“You want to eat right? Let’s go have the meal together,” Folake said with a smile dancing on her face.
This girl has to be kidding me, I was already having a bad day but meeting her was the icing on the cake.
“I’m really broke right now, you know I just fixed my phone. I barely have enough money to last the week,” I lied again.
“Don’t worry David, I’ll take care of the bills.” Folake interfered.
Unbelievable! Nothing on Earth would make me turn that down. Still, I had to put on an act; sham like I didn’t want the offer.
“You don’t have to do thatβ¦okay? I don’t want you to waste money,” I said, feigning concern.
“Listen David, as long as it’s on youβ¦it’s not a waste.”
DΔmn! Those words melted my heart, Folake really cared about me yet I never reciprocated. It wasn’t as if she wasn’t beautiful, no! Folake was the perfect definition of “black beauty”.
She’s the kind of girl that you can’t walk passed without glancing at her a second time.
Aside that, Folake was very intelligent and she had a charming aura. Her personality was top notch, although I constantly avoided her I couldn’t deny how fun it was being around her.
Despite all these, for no just cause, I ignored the charming princess that was always in my courtyard. I avoided her like a plague, for no just cause.
I sometimes lie to myself that our personalities are not compatible, but I know we flow so well, like a couple made in heaven.
We alighted from the vehicle and made for the restaurant just by the roadside. It wasn’t a big ‘ol fancy restaurant, just average classed. Many guys take their girlfriends there, because it was quite cheap compared to others.
We walked in and took a seat just near the transparent glass door at the entrance.
A waiter immediately attended to us. As my eyes ran through the menu, I wanted to pick an expensive meal, then I remembered; Folake was the one paying.
She must have read my thoughts.
“Just go ahead, David. Order whatever you wantβ¦the bills are on me.”
“Wow,” I whispered under my breath.
Minutes later, I had already begun gulping down my plate of rice and chicken. Man, it tasted so good.
“David,” She said softly.
“Yes Miss Folake,” I said with a chuckle.
“Why do you love calling me that? I prefer my other name.”
“You have another name?”
“Yeah, Folake was given to me by my grandma. I prefer the name my parents gave me at birth.”
“What’s it?” I asked a bit curious.
“Adele, I prefer Adele,” She muttered.
“Wow, so you have such a lovely name but everyone calls you Folake.”
“People have always known me as Adele, but since I entered the university everyone keeps calling me Folake.”
Adele was a wonderful name, a befitting name to be frank. Maybe it was the name all along, not that Folake was not a nice name but it may have been the reason I had been avoiding her.
Now that I knew her name was Adele, she looked better to me.
“David, there’s something I really wanted to tell you⦔
“Go on⦔I urged.
“Iβ¦I like you David, I really like you but I just don’t know. I’ve shown more than enough signs but you keep ignoring the obvious.”
I was stunned by her words, I knew she liked me but I never believed she would have the guts to say it.
“You’re not saying anything⦔
“Uhhβ¦it’sβ¦it’s fine,” I stuttered.
“I love you’re personality and you’re really beautifulβ¦Adele.” I said, fixing my gaze on her.
She couldn’t help but blush at my words, her cheeks went red and she just looked more beautiful.
“Doβ¦you like me?” She asked timidly.
“Uhhβ¦yes.”
I honestly don’t how how a “yes” fell from my lips, I was just so lost in the moment that I didn’t realize what I had just started.
“Soβ¦are we ummβ¦in a relationship?”
“I guess so.”
F*ck! What was I doing? Well Adele wasn’t bad but what was I doing?
“I love you,” she said, smiling sheepishly.
Her smile was perfectly carved, I couldn’t believe I had never noticed that she was more of a goddess than a human.
“I love you too,” I whispered.
As I said those words, my eyes caught someone, the sight I wished to behold forever, the beauty that made my heart skip.
I could feel my heart drum against my chest, as I saw that angel standing across the road.
