“Eh?”
“Ms Kim, I’m sorry.” the principal said. “We won’t extend your teaching contract until next school year.”
Giselle was stiff. “But…why?”
The principal gulped, he can’t tell the real reason. “B.. because we already found a competent teacher and our budget for next school year has been cut.”
“But.”
“I’m sorry Ms Kim. We’ll give you your last salary and compensation for February. But now, please do your best in teaching on your last days here in school.”
“Thank you Mr. Kang, for accepting me and giving me the chance to experience teaching here in your school.” She softly said. “I’ll go to my class now.”
“Thank you too, for sharing your knowledge to our students.” the principal said. It is hard for the school to let go of a great teacher like her but they needed to.
Giselle turned back and walks slowly out of the principal’s office. She sighs as the door shuts. ‘I guess my debt will keep piling up.’ she thought. She then steps on the stairs and continued going upstairs. She reaches her classroom and opens the door, serin the eager and spirited students.
She will surely miss teaching them and seeing their smiles and zealousness. They remind her of herself when she was in highschool. She weakly smiles as she walks to her table, she placed her bag on the chair and books on the table, the usual setting.
“Good morning class.”
“Good morning Ms Giselle.”
Giselle signals them to sit down and they followed. She then starts discussing the remaining topics in her subject, art history. She did it with an extra effort, as if nothing happened earlier. Her lively aura lighten up the whole class, making the subject interactive and fun.
As the bell rang, she enthusiastically said. “We’ll continue on Wednesday. Be sure to attend the study hall sessions later.
“Where are you going after this class?” Lia asked Lucas.
“I don’t think. Home, maybe?” Lucas smiles. Smiling have become a frequent thing for him the past few months.
“Do you want to go to the cafe first?”
Lucas looks at her with hesitation.
“I’ll treat you.” She said and Lucas smiles. “Aish! You always want things to be free, huh?”
Lucas chuckled and they both gets off their seats and carry their bags.
“Bye Sis.”
“Lucas, you just can’t tell them that we’re siblings out loud. You know that.”
Lia laughs and said. “Good bye Ms Giselle.”
“Where is you two going?” Giselle asked mischievously.
“To…”
“We’re not going anywhere.” He cuts in and said awkwardly and covers her mouth.
Lia removes his hands. “We’re going to the cafe.”
“Why? Are you two dating?”
Lucas gaps. “Sis! N..no! We’re not dating!”
Giselle laughs. “Then why are you going to the cafe?”
“We’re just friends and…” Lucas looks at them, not knowing what to say. He grabs Giselle’s wrist and drags her with them. “You’re going with us.”
….
Giselle holds her cup with her two hands as she takes a sip. She places it on the table and sigh. She looks at the two and smiles. “Lucas, you’re.. smiling. That’s new.”
Lucas shyly smiled. “I’ve been smiling back then. It’s just you’re not there.”
“Be good students okay? Even in other subjects, excel in them. In the future, it will help your greatly.”
Lia felt something was wrong. She held her wrist and asked. “Teacher..do you have a terminal illness?”
Giselle chuckles. She will miss Lia and her humor. “No..” she paused and adds. “I’m leaving the school. I’ll no longer teach here next year.”
“WHAT?!”
“Quiet.”
“But..why teacher?”
“I.. it’s the school decision.”
“Sis.”
“It’s okay Lucas. I’ll find another job.”
“Teacher, do visit us in the future when you have time, okay?”
“Yes I will.”
…
The school year ended and Giselle left the school with a goodbye messages from her students. It made her tear up. She wanted to stay, but she couldn’t.
She immediately look for in Gwangju, but unfortunately, schools doesn’t hire teachers as of the moment. She looked for other jobs but stores also doesn’t have any openings or didn’t hire her for an unexplained reasons.
Felix on the other hand, helps her by selling cupcakes, not only to their neighborhood but to other neighborhood. But it’s not enough, not everyone will buy cupcakes, not everyone will like them.
Giselle’s debts keep piling up- from the electric bills to him rent. The landlady already gave them a deadline to pay her rent or else she has no choice but to kick them out.
…
Tired, she walks towards her neighborhood during the latter part of dusk. She still haven’t found a job after the whole day of job hunting. She then sees Felix in front of the garage looking down while continuously stomping his right foot. Beside he were different colored and sized bags. She ran to him and asked. “What’s this?”
“The.. landlady.. kicked us out.”
Giselle then notice the gate with chains and padlocks.
“N..no.” she said while slowly shaking her head. Everything’s gone.
