After Ada agreed to marry Ben, Ben started thinking about what to do concerning Naomi, Amaka, Blessing, and Ruth because they also agreed to marry him. Ben didn’t know what to do next.
Ben said, “Should I marry them all, or should I marry only Ada?”
“I am the cause of everything. If I had known, I wouldn’t have made so many girlfriends. Now see the consequence: if I marry only Ada, the remaining four girls who accepted to marry me will not be happy. Some may even plan evil against me. What am I going to do now?”
Ben thought and thought but didn’t come up with any tangible solution.
Ben: “But Ada is the one I want to marry, and I don’t want to marry even two wives, let alone three or four. I know I have made mistakes in the past, but I want to correct them before it’s too late.”
“Because of my stupidity, I forgot about my parents in the village. Even though they are looking up to me for support, I just left them behind. I need to go and see them and know how they are doing. I will also share this problem with them, especially with my mother, Umi. I need to go and see them.”
Ben decided to go and see his parents to share with them what to do concerning Ada, Naomi, Amaka, and Ruth, and to hear their opinions. But his mind was on Ada; she was the one he loved and wanted to marry.
“But let me go and see my parents first to know their opinions on the matter,” Ben said. “I will go tomorrow to see them.”
The next morning, Ben woke up early, packed a few belongings, and set off on the journey to his village. The road was long and dusty, but Ben felt a sense of relief as he approached the familiar surroundings of his childhood home. The sight of the old, sturdy house brought a wave of nostalgia and comfort.
When Ben arrived, his mother, Umi, was outside tending to the garden. She looked up and her face lit up with a smile.
“Ben! What a surprise! Come in, come in,” Umi exclaimed, wiping her hands on her apron and embracing him.
“Mother, it’s so good to see you,” Ben replied, hugging her tightly.
Inside, the house was as warm and welcoming as he remembered. His father, who had been resting in the living room, looked up and grinned widely at the sight of his son.
“Ben! What brings you here, my boy?” his father asked.
“I have a lot to discuss with both of you,” Ben said, his tone serious. “It’s about my relationships and the future.”
Umi’s smile faded slightly as she gestured for him to sit down. “Tell us everything, Ben.”
Ben took a deep breath and recounted his dilemma, explaining how he had gotten involved with Naomi, Amaka, Blessing, and Ruth, and how each had agreed to marry him. He then shared how he realized that Ada was the one he truly loved and wanted to spend his life with.
Umi listened intently, her face growing more concerned with each passing minute. When Ben finished, there was a heavy silence in the room.
“My son,” Umi began gently, “you have indeed put yourself in a difficult position. It is not wise to have promised marriage to so many women. But I understand that you were young and didn’t foresee the complications.”
Ben’s father nodded in agreement. “You must be honest with all of them, Ben. It will be hard, and some may be very hurt, but it’s better than living a lie.”
“But how do I do that without causing them to hate me or each other?” Ben asked, worry etched on his face.
“You need to have a heart-to-heart conversation with each of them, one by one,” Umi suggested. “Explain your feelings honestly. Apologize sincerely and let them know your intentions. They might be angry, but honesty is the only way to resolve this.”
Ben sighed, feeling a bit more confident but still apprehensive. “And what about Ada? Should I tell her everything?”
“Yes, you should,” his father replied. “She deserves to know the truth. If she loves you, she will understand and support you through this.”
After spending the day with his parents and gaining their wisdom, Ben felt more prepared to face the consequences of his actions. He stayed the night, and the next morning, after a hearty breakfast and a heartfelt goodbye, he set off back to town.
As he journeyed back, Ben rehearsed what he would say to each woman. His mind was clearer now, and he felt a sense of resolve. He knew it would be a challenging task, but it was a necessary step towards the future he wanted with Ada.
When he reached town, he decided to start with Amaka. He called her and asked if they could meet up to talk. Amaka agreed, and they decided to meet at a quiet cafΓ© later that afternoon.
As Ben prepared for the meeting, he felt a mixture of anxiety and determination. It was time to take responsibility and set things right, no matter the outcome.
Ben arrived at the cafΓ© early, choosing a quiet corner where they could talk without interruptions. He ordered a cup of tea and tried to calm his nerves as he waited for Amaka. The minutes felt like hours, buut finally, he saw her walking in, her expression curious and slightly apprehensive.
“Ben, it’s good to see you,” Amaka said with a smile, taking a seat across from him.
“Amaka, thank you for coming,” Ben replied, trying to muster a smile of his own. “There’s something very important I need to discuss with you.”
Amaka’s smile faded a bit, and she leaned forward, her eyes searching his. “What is it, Ben? You sound serious.”
Ben took a deep breath, steadying himself. “Amaka, I need to be honest with you. I’ve made some mistakes, and I need to come clean about everything.” He paused, collecting his thoughts. “When I asked you to marry me, I wasn’t entirely truthful. I also made the same promise to Naomi, Blessing, and Ugo.”
Amaka’s eyes widened, her face a mix of shock and hurt. “What? Ben, how could you?”
“I know,” Ben said, his voice heavy with regret. “It was wrong, and I realize that now. I was confused and didn’t think about the consequences. But I’ve come to understand that there’s only one person I truly want to be with, and that’s Ada.”
Amaka’s expression hardened, and she crossed her arms. “So, what does that mean for me? For us?”
“It means that I have to be honest with you, with all of you,” Ben replied. “I need to end the engagements and apologize sincerely for my actions. You deserve someone who loves you fully and is committed to only you. I wasn’t fair to you, and I’m truly sorry.”
For a moment, Amaka was silent, processing his words. Then she spoke, her voice trembling slightly. “Ben, I appreciate your honesty, even though it hurts. I deserve better, and I’m glad you see that now. But it’s going to take time for me to forgive you.”
“I understand,” Ben said softly. “Take all the time you need. I never meant to hurt you, Amaka.”
With that, their conversation ended, and they parted ways. Ben felt a weight lift off his shoulders, but he knew he had more difficult conversations ahead. He called Naomi next, arranging to meet her at the park later in the evening.
As the sun set, Ben walked to the park, where Naomi was waiting on a bench. She greeted him warmly, but her smile faltered when she saw the seriousness on his face.
“Naomi, we need to talk,” Ben began, sitting beside her. He repeated the same confession he had given Amaka, watching as her face shifted from surprise to hurt and then to anger.
“Ben, I trusted you!” Naomi exclaimed, tears welling in her eyes. “How could you do this to me?”
“I’m so sorry, Naomi,” Ben said, his voice thick with emotion. “I was foolish and didn’t think about how my actions would affect you. You deserve so much better than this.”
Naomi stood up, wiping her eyes. “I can’t believe this. I need some time to process everything.”
“Take all the time you need,” Ben replied. “I just wanted to be honest with you, finally.”
As Naomi walked away, Ben felt the ache of guilt and regret. Two down, two more to go, he thought. He called Blessing and Ugo next, setting up meetings with each of them the following day.
The next morning, Ben met with Blessing at a small diner. She was initially cheerful, but like the others, her demeanor changed as Ben told her the truth. Blessing listened quietly, then simply nodded, her disappointment clear. She thanked him for his honesty but asked for time apart to heal.
Finally, Ben met Ruth at her apartment. She took the news the hardest, her eyes filling with tears as Ben spoke. “I trusted you, Ben,” she said softly. “I thought we had something real.”
“We did, Ruth,” Ben said, his heart aching. “But I need to be fair to you and everyone else. I’m truly sorry.”
When the last conversation ended, Ben felt emotionally drained but relieved. He had done the right thing, no matter how painful it had been. Now, only one conversation remained: the one with Ada.
He called Ada and asked if they could meet. She agreed, sensing the urgency in his voice. They decided to meet at a small park where they often went for walks.
As Ben waited for Ada, he felt a mix of hope and fear. He loved her deeply and prayed she would understand. When she arrived, her eyes filled with concern, Ben took her hands and began to speak.
“Ada, I need to tell you everything,” he started. “I’ve made some terrible mistakes, but I want to be completely honest with you.”
He recounted the entire story, from the multiple engagements to the recent conversations with the other women. Ada listened intently, her expression unreadable.
When he finished, she was silent for a moment, then finally spoke. “Ben, I appreciate your honesty. It’s not easy to hear, but I respect that you came clean. It will take time for me to process this, but if we are to have a future together, it must be built on trust and honesty.”
Ben nodded, his heart swelling with hope. “Thank you, Ada. I promise to be the man you deserve, from now on.”
As they walked together, hand in hand, Ben felt a sense of renewal. The path ahead was still uncertain, but for the first time in a long while, he felt he was on the right track.
One day, Naomi was thinking, “How can Ben just leave me like that, after all the promises he made to me? Even when all my suitors came, I kept telling them that someone wanted to marry me. Now, the person who made me reject all the suitors coming my way says he will no longer marry me. What am I going to do now?”
“Ben can’t use me and dump me like that,” Naomi said to herself. “It can’t work. I need to do something now. Ben can’t just leave like that. No, it’s not going to work.”
