Ben’s eyes lit up as he answered the call, trying to sound cheerful and carefree. “Hey, Naomi! How are you doing today?” Naomi’s voice was sweet and innocent, but Ben knew she was trouble. “I’m doing great, Ben. I was just thinking about you and wondering when I’ll see you again.” Ben’s mind raced as he tried to come up with an excuse. “Ah, Naomi, I’m so busy with work right now. I’m trying to get a new business off the ground, and it’s taking up all my time.” Naomi’s voice turned sulky. “You’re always busy, Ben. You never have time for me anymore.” Ben knew he had to pacify her. “That’s not true, Naomi. I’ll make time for you soon, I promise. Just give me a few more days to sort things out.” Naomi sighed. “Okay, Ben. But don’t forget about me, or you’ll regret it.” Ben breathed a sigh of relief as he ended the call. He knew he had to keep Naomi happy, or she would cause trouble for him. He thought to himself, “I need to find a way to keep her occupied until I can get more money. Maybe I can promise her a gift or a trip somewhere.” Little did Ben know, Naomi was not the only one causing trouble for him. Joy, the girl he had tried to deceive earlier, was not going to let him off the hook so easily. She had been thinking about their encounter, and she was determined to expose Ben’s lies and deceit. As Ben went about his day, he had no idea that Joy was watching him, waiting for the perfect moment to strike. The game of cat and mouse was far from over, and Ben was about to find out that his web of deceit was starting to unravel.
As Ben was going to the construction site on Lugbe Street, Joy started following him from a distance. Ben was unaware that Joy was following him. He walked until he reached the construction site, where he was asked to assist a block layer and agreed. He changed into his work clothes, while Joy watched from behind, thinking to herself, “What is Ben doing at a construction site? And is he really taking off his clothes? I’m sure it’s not what I think. Is Ben actually a poor guy? What am I seeing?” Joy recalled the phone call Ben made in her presence, claiming to speak with one of his business associates who was going to send him five hundred thousand naira. “All this talk about bank issues is fake,” Joy thought. “Ben is living a fake life.”
At the construction site, Ben began measuring sand for the work. After finishing, he added cement and water, mixing everything together. He asked the block layer if he should bring the mixture, and when told yes, he carried the head pan with the mixed cement and started laying the blocks. Joy decided to reveal herself, coming out from her hiding place to confront Ben.
“Ben, what am I seeing?” Joy asked. “You’ve been living a fake life all this while, lying to me about your wealthy parents and numerous business ventures. You’re actually a laborer!”
Ben was taken aback, thinking, “Should I still try to lie?” But Joy had already seen him, and he knew he couldn’t deceive her further. Ben tried to come up with an excuse, “This is not my usual place; I’m a businessman. I have a problem with customs officers who seized my goods, and I need to raise two hundred thousand naira to complete the payment.”
Joy wasn’t having it. “Ben, clap for yourself. Who do you want to deceive again? I’m used to your lies now.” Ben tried to explain further, but the block layer man he was serving called him, and he had to leave. As Joy walked away, she thought, “Now I know the kind of person Ben is – arrogant and claiming to be rich while being poorer than me. I’m the one who should be giving him money, not the other way around.”
Meanwhile, Ben wondered what brought Joy to the construction site, thinking, “Even if she’s no longer interested in our relationship, I have many girls to replace her. Mojisola and Naomi are more beautiful than her, so if she wants to leave me because she found out I’m not rich, she can do whatever she wants.” Ben continued working, making sure the blocks were laid properly.
As the day went on, Ben couldn’t overcome the feeling that Joy’s confrontation had left him with. He knew he had been living a lie, and it was only a matter of time before someone discovered it. He tried to focus on his work, but his mind kept wandering back to Joy and the look of disgust on her face when she saw him at the construction site.
After finishing his shift, Ben decided to head home, hoping to clear his head and come up with a plan to salvage what was left of his relationship with Joy. As he walked, he noticed a figure following him from a distance. He quickened his pace, but the figure kept pace with him. Ben’s heart raced as he wondered if Joy had sent someone to confront him again.
Just as he was about to turn onto his street, the figure revealed itself to be Mojisola, one of the girls he had been seeing on the side. “Ben, I need to talk to you,” she said, her voice firm but nervous. Ben sighed, knowing he couldn’t avoid her any longer. “What is it, Mojisola?” he asked, trying to sound nonchalant.
“I know what you’ve been doing, Ben,” she said, her eyes narrowing. “I know about Joy, and I know about the construction site. You’re not the rich businessman you claim to be, are you?” Ben’s heart sank as he realized he had been caught in another lie. He tried to come up with an excuse, but Mojisola cut him off. “Don’t bother, Ben. I’m not interested in your lies anymore. I just want to know why you felt the need to deceive me and Joy and who knows how many other girls.”
Ben was taken aback by Mojisola’s directness, but he knew he had no choice but to come clean. “I don’t know, Mojisola,” he said, shaking his head. “I guess I just wanted to feel important and attractive to women. I didn’t mean to hurt anyone.”
Mojisola looked at him with a mixture of disgust and pity. “You’re not attractive, Ben. You’re just a liar and a fake. And you know what? I’m done with you.” With that, she turned and walked away, leaving Ben feeling defeated and alone.
