As Ben stepped away to take the call, Joy’s eyes narrowed, her mind racing with possibilities. She glanced around the cafΓ©, wondering if anyone was watching her, if anyone knew the truth about Ben. The call seemed to last an eternity, and when Ben finally returned, Joy’s doubt had grown.
“Who was that?” she asked, trying to sound casual.
“Just a business associate,” Ben replied with a smile. “Don’t worry about it, Joy. Let’s focus on us.”
But Joy couldn’t overcome the feeling that Ben was hiding something. She pushed the thought aside, determined to enjoy her lunch and get the money she needed. As they ate, Ben regaled her with stories of his supposed business ventures, his charm and silver tongue almost convincing her that he was genuine.
Almost.
As they finished their meal, Joy brought up the money again, her voice firm but polite. “Ben, I appreciate your help, but I really need that money today. Can you please transfer it to me now?”
Ben’s expression turned apologetic, and he reached for his phone. “I’m so sorry, Joy. I forgot to tell you – my bank account is still frozen. I can’t access my funds right now.”
Joy’s eyes widened in disbelief. “What? You said it was sorted out!”
Ben’s smile faltered for a moment before he recovered. “I know, I know. It’s just a temporary setback. I promise you, Joy, I’ll get the money to you as soon as I can.”
Joy’s doubts had finally crystallized into certainty. Ben was lying to her, using his charm to string her along. She stood up, her voice firm. “I think it’s time for me to go, Ben. I’ll find another way to get what I need.”
Ben’s face fell, but he quickly recovered, his eyes gleaming with a hint of desperation. “Joy, wait! Please don’t go. I’ll make it up to you, I swear.”
But Joy was already walking away, leaving Ben and his empty promises behind. Little did she know, Ben’s games were far from over, and their encounter was only the beginning of a tangled web of deceit.
Ben thought to himself, “Look at this girl, I want to help her ministry move forward, and she’s doing good for me. If you want to leave, go ahead. I have many other girls to replace you. The new one I just got is already causing trouble, while the others I’ve been dealing with have not acted this way. Although I know what to say to calm you down.”
“Joy, I will call you later,” Ben said.
“Stay here for a bit,” Ben added before he started going to his house.
When he reached his house, Ben took a bath. After finishing, he decided to check his total money on hand. Upon checking, he found out that his last card had only two thousand naira (β¦2,000) left.
“Oh, my money has finished already. I need to find work to raise more money. I’ll check if there’s a construction site where I can work to earn money. Joy has used up the little money I had to manage myself. Tomorrow, I’ll leave this area and go far to find where they’re building houses. Let me check if there’s any work there,” Ben muttered to himself.
Ben concluded to go to another street far from his own to search for any available work so he could raise money to start again.
When night fell, Ben ate his food and went to sleep. The following morning, Ben started preparing for work. He thought to himself, “Which street should I go to find work at a building site? I’ll start with Lugbe Street. If I don’t find any site there, I’ll try Wuse Street. If that fails too, I’ll try Garki Street. Before I go to these three streets, I must find a place where they’re building new houses so I can check for work there.”
“I need to go far so none of my girlfriends will see me and start talking nonsense. I don’t want any of them to see me doing hard work,” Ben muttered.
After finishing the remaining food in his house, Ben began his journey to the streets he mentioned earlier, starting with Lugbe Street. He continued on his way.
As Ben walked down Lugbe Street, he scanned the area for any signs of construction. He had been walking for over an hour, and the sun was starting to beat down on him. Just when he was about to give up, he saw a group of workers in orange vests gathered around a building site. Ben’s heart raced with excitement as he quickened his pace.
When he arrived at the site, he approached one of the workers and asked, “Excuse me, sir. I’m looking for work. Is there any available position here?”
The worker, a burly man with a thick beard, looked Ben up and down before responding, “What skills do you have, boy?”
Ben thought quickly, trying to come up with something that would impress the worker. “I’m a skilled laborer, sir. I can do anything from digging to carpentry.”
The worker raised an eyebrow. “Okay, let me ask the site manager. Wait here.”
Ben waited anxiously, his mind racing with thoughts of the money he could earn and the girls he could impress with his newfound wealth. After what felt like an eternity, the worker returned with a tall, imposing figure in a hard hat.
“This is the site manager, Mr. James,” the worker said. “He’ll decide if you’re hired.”
Ben stood up straight, trying to look as confident and capable as possible. “Hello, sir. I’m Ben. I’m here to work.”
Mr. James eyed Ben skeptically. “What makes you think you can handle this kind of work?”
Ben launched into a elaborate story about his supposed experience on construction sites, exaggerating his skills and accomplishments. Mr. James listened intently, his expression unreadable.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, Mr. James spoke up. “Alright, Ben. I’ll give you a chance. But if you can’t keep up, you’re out. Got it?”
Ben nodded eagerly, relief washing over him. “Yes, sir. Thank you, sir!”
And with that, Ben began a construction worker, determined to earn enough money to keep his web of deceit spinning.
As Ben started doing the work, he quickly realized that construction work was not as easy as he had thought. The physical labor was grueling, and the other workers seemed to know exactly what they were doing. Ben, on the other hand, was struggling to keep up. He made mistake after mistake, and his coworkers began to notice.
Ben was struggling to carry a heavy load of bricks when Musa, the seasoned laborer who had been assigned to mentor him, pulled him aside. “Ben, my boy, you need to step up your game,” he said, his voice firm but kind. “You’re not cut out for this kind of work. Maybe you should consider a different job.” Ben was taken aback. He had never been one to take criticism well, and he felt a surge of anger and pride. “I can do this, Musa,” he insisted.
“I just need a chance to prove myself.” Musa sighed. “Alright, Ben. But if you can’t keep up, you’re going to get hurt. Or worse, you’re going to get someone else hurt.” Ben nodded, determined to prove Musa wrong. He worked carefully that day, making sure he didn’t make any mistakes again. In the evening, they paid him for the work he did that day. They paid him six thousand naira (6,000). Ben was so happy that he took the money and started going home.
When he reached home, he was happy that he had made such an amount that day. Ben thought to himself, “I made six thousand naira (6,000) today. I will go there tomorrow and the next few days to make more money. If I can make around twenty thousand naira (20,000), I can start fresh.” He also thought, “I need to find another new girl to deceive. If I have ten thousand naira (10,000), I can use it to impress her. If I don’t find someone, I will call one of my girlfriends and spend the money on her.”
Just then, his phone rang. He checked who was calling and found out it was one of his girlfriends, Naomi.
