One day, Ben was sitting in his parlor when his wife Ada came back from the shop. Ada greeted Ben and started going inside the house. Ben called her back and said, “Ada, why didn’t you greet me?”
Ada replied, “I greeted you before going inside. How can I see my husband and not greet him?”
Ben responded, “Ada, you are a liar. You didn’t greet me when you came back just now.”
Ada insisted that she had greeted Ben.
Because of this, Ben gave Ada a hard slap. “How dare you challenge me when I’m talking. You didn’t greet me, and I’m telling you what you did was wrong, and you are here talking rubbish,” Ben said.
Ada wanted to explain more, but Ben gave her another hard slap. Ada started crying. Ben began beating Ada. Ben’s children started crying too. That day, Ben beat Ada severely.

The pattern continued relentlessly. One evening, Ada was sewing clothes to sell at the market. Ben stormed into the room, furious that she wasn’t paying attention to him. He tore the fabric from her hands and slapped her so hard that she fell off the chair. He kicked her while she was down, ignoring her pleas for mercy.
Each day, Ben found new reasons to beat Ada. One night, as she lay in bed nursing her bruises, he accused her of plotting against him. He pulled her out of bed and hit her repeatedly with his belt. Ada cried out, but Ben’s rage only intensified, and he beat her until he was exhausted.
