“Ghost!” He screamed and jumped up to his feet.
Behind him, seated on a chair, a scarf wrapped around her head, was his daughter β Vivian.
His heart thumped heavily against his chest, at that moment he felt his eyes were playing tricks on him.
Everyone’s attention was suddenly drawn to him.
“Vivian?” He muttered with disbelief in his eyes.
“Dad.”
“Is it really you?” He asked.
“It’s me.”
“Hmm!” Desmond gave a deep sigh.
“I can’t believe this…what happened to you? Where were you?”
Vivian bent her head in shame, she opened her mouth to speak but words had suddenly become a heavy rock.
“What is it? What happened to you?” Desmond asked again with sheer concern.
Slowly, Vivian removed the scarf around her head. She looked very unkept and malnourished. Desmond even doubted it was his daughter, she had become pale and her bones were visible through her skin.
“What happened to you? Talk to me Vivian, you look terrible.”
“I… I ran away from home.” Vivian said, a tear rolling from her cheek.
“My goodness!” Her dad exclaimed, a sharp pain pierced through his heart.
“Why would you run away? Everyone thought you were dead… Why? Why would you run away?”
Vivian sobbed, more tears made their way out of her shrunken eyes.
Desmond walked up to her, he sat beside his daughter, a lot of questions racing through his mind. Desmond and his wife had done everything… everything they could do to make their only child happy. He could only wonder what could have made their daughter take such drastic decision.
He held her hand in his palm, his daughter’s once soft palm had become as hard as that of a bricklayer.
“You’re not the same Vivian I used to know, you must have passed through hell.”
“Yeah…” She said smiling even though she was in tears.
“You’ve still not told me anything… where have you been?”
“Tolu tricked me…”
“Tolu…who is Tolu?”
“Tolu was my senior in secondary school, he was one of the rich guys in school…”
“So what happened?”
“I… I… He asked me out and we started dating.”
“So you have a boyfriend?”
“Not anymore. He promised me to send me abroad to further my studies; something I’ve been pleading with you and mum for years.”
“But you know your mum and I don’t have the financial capacity to do that, there’s nothing we wouldn’t do for you. I am even on the verge of making a mega financial breakthrough, I asked you to be patient with me, now you’ve caused mother and I so much pain.”
“I’m sorry dad, I never knew things would turn out this way.”
Her dad shook his head.
“So what happened with Tolu?”
“He lied to me…he had no plans of doing such. Tolu wanted to use me for ritual purposes,” Vivian burst into tears.
“He also tricked two of my other friends, I was lucky to escape but it wasn’t the same for them.”
More tears dribbled down her cheek, it was obvious she was traumatized. Whatever had happened to her must have been a terrifying event.
“So where is the Tolu now?”
“I don’t know,” she managed to say.
“Hmm… When did this happen?”
“A week after I left home .”
“So why didn’t you come back all this while?”
“I was ashamed of myself, I didn’t have the guts to stand before you and mum. I thought maybe I could fend for myself…”
“And how did it go?” Desmond asked sarcastically.
“It was a horrible experience, I slept at a motor park and I discovered that life is not a bed of roses, I never knew because you and mum always pampered me.”
“I’m sorry… you’ve been through a lot.”
“I’m also very sorry dad,” she cried.
Desmond pulled her into a hug, he held her tightly to himself.
Just then, he spotted the phone he bought for her in her hands.
“It’s that not your phone, I thought it got missing…”
“Oh…I actually payed the men who called you the other day. My belly rumbled, I had not eaten for two days and that was the only way I thought of getting money from you and mum.”
“Wow!” Desmond exclaimed.
“I never knew I had a daughter so wild.”
He paused.
“So how did you know we are here?”
“I’ve been trying to get to you and mum, I heard her mention that I’m dead over the phone that day.”
“Hmm…this is just too much for me to comprehend. Well it’s fine, I’ll leave you to the nurse, your mother’s life is at stake.”
A day later.
The doctors carried out the transfusion, and Aliyah was now conscious.
When she had recovered to an extent, she was allowed to receive visitors.
As the door to the ward opened, Vivian, Desmond and his mother walked in.
The shock was visible on Aliyah’s face. Her heart leaped for joy at the sight of her only child.
Her mother in law was also filled with smiles, she was also dumbfounded when she saw her only grandchild.
“Vivian…” Aliyah managed to say. She stretched her hand towards her daughter. Vivian walked quickly to her mum.
Aliyah felt her daughter’s face and immediately she gave a wide smile, it was a smile mixed with joy and disbelief. It was a daughter-mother reunion, a moment that felt out of this world.
Butterflies filled Aliyah’s stomach, the gem she thought she had lost was beside her once again; her only treasure.
After a minute of bonding, Aliyah was forced to ask questions.
“What happened to you my child?” She asked with sheer concern.
Desmond explained everything.
There was a thick fog of silence as soon as he finished.
Vivian broke the silence.
“I’m very sorry mum, I’m sorry for the pain I caused you and dad.”
“It’s okay my child, at least you’re alive. And if I had not taken that step of bravery who knows what those evil people would have done.”
“Concerning that…” Desmond interrupted.
“The police were here earlier today, they actually wanted to commend your bravery, they found out that Linda and Victor were responsible for the previous killings. They even traced the victims to two communities away.”
“My goodness!” Aliyah exclaimed.
“Thank God they are dead now.”
Just in the heat of emotions, Desmond’s mum interrupted.
“I have a confession to make…” She said as she gulped down air…
