π«π December Rush Chapter Eight:
βChancele!β You came to mock me, right?β I asked in shame.
βWhy wouldnβt I, Ebuka? You have been a big fool. See where your foolery has landed you.β
βYou may say that, but all I know is that I fought for my love.β
βYour love? Your love that hasnβt come to check on you since you were thrown in jail.β She laughed.
βHow did you know about that?β I asked surprised.
βNothing hides in this village. Let me tell you, Ebuka. You are a fool. If I were you, I would forget about that stupid Rose of a girl.β
βChancele!! Donβt you ever talk about her in that way.β I warned. βYou are just being jealous.β
βJealous? Of whom? Let me tell you, I have moved on. I just came here because I have pity for you. Anyway, I am leaving now, but before I go, I have a little information for you.β
βAnd what is that?β
βYour Rose and Naked Wire are all over the place. So, stop dreaming. She doesnβt love you; she didnβt love you. She just used you. So, be wise.β
βYou are lying.β
βAlright, have it your way. As for me, I am gone. For your information, I will be moving to the city in a weekβs time. So, your days of calling me a village girl are over. Enjoy your life. Bye!!β
After Chancele had gone and I had been taken back to my cell, I started analyzing the whole thing. Could it be that what Chancele had said was true? She could be making sense. Otherwise, why has Rosy not come to look for me? All the people who are close to me have come to see me.
Even Chancele who had me in her bad books had come to see me. So, why is it that itβs only Rosy who was supposed to be my love, the same person for whom I had fought for and ultimately landed myself in jail, who had come to see me? What could be happening. I sat down on the cold hard floor of my lonely cell and wept quietly. I hoped it was not what I was thinking.
The next day, I was released. After I had signed my release papers, I walked out of the jail and met Cominash outside. She was waiting for me. I wondered how she knew the exact time I was going to be released.
βHi Ebuka Love.β
βCominash, what are you doing here?β
βI came to see you, and coincidentally, one of the policemen told me you were going to be released soon. So, I decided to wait for you outside.β She replied.
βThat was very thoughtful of you, my dear. Thank you so much for everything.β
βItβs alright, Ebuka. Whatever, happens to you, also affects me.β
βHow do you mean, Comi?β
βI see you as part of me. To me, you are not just a lover, you are like a brother to me. You are the elder brother I didnβt have. I love you so very much, Ebuka. I just wish you could love me too with the same energy.β
βCominash, see, I love you so much, so very much. You are a nice lady that everyone would like to be with. The problem is that I am not the type of person for you. You are too good for me. I am a bad boy. I am a player, a Casanova. You deserve better. If you keep coming to me, you will only end up getting hurt. I donβt want you to be hurt.β I explained to her.
I understand, Ebuka. Do not worry, I will be patient. I know that someday, you will change and love me like I deserve to.β
βOkay, if you say so.β
As we were walking home, I spotted naked form a distance. Since I wasnβt comfortable with him seeing me with Cominash, I forced her to take a bike home. Naked had always mocked me for dating a chubby girl, and I had always lied to him that Comi and I had broken up. Also, I didnβt want to ruin my chances with Rosy. If Naked saw us together, he would most definitely tell Rosy. Who knew how she would react?
When Naked came close to me, he burst into a raucous and provocative laughter.
βNaked, you think this is over?β I asked.
βOf course, it is, Ebuka. What are you going to do? Now you know who I am. One mistake, and I am getting you arrested again and sending you back to jail.β He laughed.
βYou think so? You think you can use your corrupt police ways to get me back to jail? Anyway, you have your uniform on your side. But I will prove to you that we are the ones who run this village. I will prove to you that I have Nigerian blood running in my veins.β I threatened.
βMy friend, get out. You are just a desperate man. There is nothing you can do. Anyway, a little advice for you. The holiday is over. Christmas and New Year have come and gone. Go back to the city, go back to Buea and concentrate on your studies instead of staying in this village and be dragging girls with me. You have your fat Cominash. Be contented with her.β He laughed.
I realized that if I continued staying there, bandying words with him, it might lead to us exchanging blows. He was a boss when it came to verbal fencing. However, I was adept at replying to his digs. Nevertheless, I couldnβt tell how long it would take before blows started passing. So, I decided to leave. I needed to go home and rest. The next day, I intended to go see Rosy and interrogate her.
The next afternoon, I called Rosy but she didnβt pick. I texted her on WhatsApp, but she blue-ticked me. I was desperate to see her. Not only did I want to question her, I also wanted to see her lovely and beautiful face.
As foolish as I was, I was still head over heels in love with her, but she was not picking my calls. What was really happening? Holiday was over. I had to go back to Buea any day from now, probably in the coming days or the next week. Actually, she too was supposed to have gone back, or be preparing to go back. What was still keeping her in the village?
Maybe she was waiting for me to come back from jail, see me one last time before leaving. Maybe she wanted to give me my last supper before leaving. I smiled sheepishly at the thought of that. But if she was waiting for me, that meant she loved me very much. If she loved me very much, why didnβt she come to see me in jail.
I knew the reason. It was that foolish Naked. He must have used his policeman status to threaten her. That idiot. If he was not a copβ¦I wished he was not a cop. I would have shown him why the honey badger is very formidable in spite of its small size.
I wished Naked would just disappear, but that wish had to wait for another day. Today, I had to see Rosy come rain or high water. Since she was not picking my calls, I decided that the best thing to do was to go to her house. Yes, I had never been to her house, and I had no idea how wild her parents were. But what would I be afraid of? I had already been to jail. A man doesnβt fear to fall when he is already on the ground. I must do this. I must go to her house.
Since we lived in the same neighbourhood, I didnβt need to get a bike. I simply strolled until I got close to her house. Parked in front of her house, was a shiny new Range Rover. It was so beautiful, so sleek, new and sparkling that a flush of insecurity immediately took over my entire system. Who could have parked such a beautiful car in front of her house? I asked myself. Could it be Naked? Nah, where would Naked have the kind of money that would purchase such an expensive car?
I looked at the car again and it wowed me. Could it be Nakedβs? He might not have money, but he was a cop. The car might belong to the government. They might have given him to use for his undercover work? I wish the government knew he was a riffraff. I wish the government knew that he was busy dragging girls in the village instead of doing his job. But wait, if the car was parked there by Naked, that meant he and Rosy had become really close, otherwise, what would his car be doing there?
A lot might have happened while I was in jail. Oh God!! Why na? Why all these? I looked at the car again and shook my head. No, there was no way it could be Nakedβs. He could never have such a car. The government would not be so dumb as to give a fine car like that to the lowlife called Nake Wire. The problem with me was that I hated Naked with a passion, if not for anything, at least because he threw me in jail. Because I hated him, I seriously underestimated him. That was why I convinced myself that he was no the owner of the car.
I tried to call Rosyβs number again. Once again, she didnβt pick. I had no other choice. I walked up to her door and knocked.
βWho is there?β A voice which I could bet was hers, answered.
βEbuka.β
The door opened suddenly and out came Rosy, looking dashing and beautiful. Before I could utter any word, she slammed the door shut again and dragged me away. When we got to about twenty meters from her house, she asked.
βEbuka, what is the meaning of this? How could you come to my house without calling?β She was speaking in a hushed and hurried voice.
βI have called you countless times, but you were not picking. Check your phone.β I replied.
βOh! That is true.β She confirmed, looking at her phone. βI am so sorry; my phone wasnβt with me. How have you been?β
βGood, Rosy. Just that I missed you. You heard I was locked up for fighting with Naked. Why didnβt you come to see me?β I asked.
βI am sorry, Ebuka. I really wanted to come and see you. However, my elder brother suddenly returned from overseas. I had to be around so that I could run errands for him. I am so, so sorry.β
βItβs alright, Rosy. There is no problem. He is going to be my in-law someday, So, there is no reason to border. Is he the owner of that beautiful car?β
βYes, he is. In fact, he will start looking for me, soon. I have to get going. Please, understand.β She spoke, attempting to leave, but I held her back.
βYou canβt just go like that na. I havenβt seen you in a while, and I have only just seen you now, and you are already leaving?β I was angry.
βItβs not my fault oh, Ebuka. It is my elder brotherβs. Please, just try to understand. You know these bushfallers, they are always very demanding.β
βAlright, how about me? Donβt you think I need your attention too?β
βAbi you are the one who said you are going to be his in-law soon?β She asked.
βYes.β
βGood, so you wouldnβt want to get him angry, would you?β
βOf course, not.β
βSo, let me go. I will see you another day.β
βWhen? Which day exactly. I want you to be precise.β
βAlright, this coming Saturday, we will meet at our usual love place under the mango tree. I assure you that I will give you what you have been asking for on that day.β She spoke.
βReally?β I asked excitedly. I was smiling like a virgin whose breast has just been touched.
βYes, I will. Can I go now?β
βYes, you can go. See you on Saturday.β
Before I could even fish speaking, she had left. I went back home happy with myself. I couldnβt wait for Saturday to come so that I could finally have her. Chancele had been lying all long. I had won the battle. Rosy still loved me and belonged to me. After that Saturday, I was going to cozy up to her elder brother who had just returned form overseas. I needed to make him my friend. We had to start doing in-law things.
Soon, it was Saturday. I called Rosy and asked her when we should meet. I needed to know the precise time. I realized that she seemed to be in a noisy place, and could not get me properly. However, I did hear her say that I should come to her house, instead. She said her elder brother wanted to talk to me. That piece of news sounded like music to my ears. I got dressed immediately in a clean nice suit, took the ring I had recently bought, for I intended to propose to her that day, and started going to her house.
As soon as I got close to the house, I saw the same car she had said was her brotherβs own. The car was driving up to her house. It was nicely decorated. I wondered why the car would be decorated. As I stood there wondering, I realized that other cars, equally decorated, were pulling up to the house. I also noticed that there was a small group of people, men and women, all properly dressed.
Then, I received the shock of my life. The car doors were opened and Rosy and a handsome looking man stepped out. She was dressed in a sexy and beautiful wedding gown, and the man was dressed in an expensive blazer. They kissed passionately as the small crowd cheered them and threw flowers on them. Rosy looked at me and smiled. That was when it dawned on me. That was when realization came to me.
Rosy had played me. I now understood everything. Her refusal to give me sex, her extended stay in the village, her refusal to visit me at the prison. It meant she was in love with another man. I had just been wasting my time. Oh no!! Why would Rosy do this to me? I was kind to her. I gave her the money given to me by Cominash. I was wicked to Cominash because of her. I fought a policeman because of her and spent several days in jail, all for her. Here she was, married to another man. The same man she lied was her brother. Oh women!!
I removed the ring I had bought from my pocket, locked at it and threw it in the bush. I could barely see. I felt like I was going to collapse. I felt like I was going to die. So, in order not to embarrass myself, I turned around and was about to start running back home when something caught my attention.
Leaning on one of the wedding cars, was Naked wire. He was also dressed in a suit and was sobbing quietly. I smiled weakly at him, turned around and ran home with all the energy in me. He too had received the shock of his life. We had both been played. When I got home, I laid on my bed and wept until I fell asleep. A week later I packed my bags and returned to the city, promising myself never to come back.
Now, you would ask what happened to Cominash. Well, it may console you to know that Cominash and I now live in the city. We have a lovely two years old daughter because she got pregnant for me before I left the village.
When she disclosed it to me, after I had already returned to the city, I went back to the village and made peace with her. Her family insisted that she must move in with me to show that I was serious about my intentions of getting married to her. I now love her with everything in me and we plan to marry soon.
As for Naked Wire and Rosy, I have never seen or heard of them again.
THE ENDβ¦!!!
Wow what a lovely story
