π«π December Rush Chapter Seven:
βGet him, officer. That is the criminal. That is the man who came and assaulted my children, right in my house, my own house.β Nakedβs mother spoke in anger.
βOfficer, I can explain. I assaulted no one. He drew the first blood. I had no choice but toβ¦β
βWill you shut up, young man and come with me.β He spoke, attempting to drag me away.
βDo you know who you are joking with, officer? I am a law student, and by virtue of that, I am going to be a senior advocate of this country someday. What you are doing is illegal. You have no right, whatsoever to come into my house and arrest me without a warrant.β I spoke.
βWill you shut up there? You donβt want to be arrested without a warrant, but you came to my house to fight my son without a warrant. Officer, I said arrest him.β Nakedβs mum was very furious.
βMadam, she is speaking the truth. I cannot arrest him without a warrant.β The policeman told her.
βLook here, officer. Do your job. I am versed in these things. Sometimes arrests can be carried out without a warrant.β
βYes, Madam. That is only in the case where the culprit is caught committing the act flagrante delicto. It can also happen when the culprit is at the risk of escaping, but as you know that is not the case here.β He was reluctant.
βArrest him, officer. I will take the responsibility.β Naked spoke.
βWhy, Sir. You donβt have the powers to give such an order.β The policeman complained.
βYou think I donβt?β Naked asked.
He put his hand in his pocket and to my greatest shock and amazement, pulled out a police badge and showed it to the constable who had come to arrest me.
βConstable, I am Detective Besong Van Nistelrooy AKA Naked Wire, from SEMIL. Now, constable, I order you to arrest this man immediately.β
I was shocked. So, Naked was a cop. He was not just a cop but a detective of the countryβs intelligence agency. So, I had actually attacked a cop. No doubt the man had been behaving so confidently. Oh, I was in trouble. Where was my aunt? I needed her now to come to my rescue. I wish my uncle hadnβt travelled.
βI am sorry, Sir.β The police constable spoke. βI didnβt know you were a law enforcement agent. However, Sir. This village doesnβt fall withing your jurisdiction. So, with all due respect, Sir. You cannot order me to arrest this man.β
βWell, constable, I am well within my jurisdiction. I was sent here as an undercover agent to track down some criminals operating in this locality. So, you see, I am covered. Now, will you arrest him, or do you want me to write a report against you?β
The poor constable had no choice. He brought out his handcuffs and put them around my wrists, but I wasnβt going to allow myself to be taken away so easily. I resisted viciously, but I was finally overpowered and bundled into the police car that was waiting. As I was being forced into the car, my auntie, who had gone to the market came back into the compound just in time.
βWhere are you taking my son to?β She asked, running to the police car.
βWe have taken him in for questioning, Madam.β The constable replied. βHe attacked and assaulted a law enforcement officer. If you need any more explanations, you can follow us later to the station.β
βEbuka, what did you do?β My aunt asked, concern on her face.
βNo time for explanations, aunt. Please, call my uncle. Call him and tell him that I am in trouble.
I was taken to the police station and kept in holding. Naked came and looked at me with scorn on his face. I returned his stare with defiance and hostility. After my statement had been taken down, I was put in a lone little cell all to myself. I sat on the bare floor of the cell and thought about many things. So, Naked was a police man, and he didnβt tell anyone. Anyway, I would deal with that later. I hoped Rose would come and see me. She didnβt even need to come and see me because I was confident that my uncle would soon order for my release.
About two hours later, a policeman came to my cell and told me that my uncle wanted to speak to me.
βHello, uncle.β
βEbuka. What is your problem? How come you went and attacked a policeman in his house?β He was furious.
βI am sorry, uncle. I didnβt know he was a cop. Please forgive me.β
βForgive you, do you know the penalty for attacking an officer of the law in the execution of his duties? You are very fortunate that you are my cousin. If not so, you would have spent many years in jail.β
βI am so sorry, does that mean I will be released today?β I asked.
βNo, you will be spending a few more days inside.β
βWhy uncle? You are the commissioner of police. You are the boss here. All that is needed is one phone call from you, and I will be released.β
βI am sorry, Ebuka. That would have been possible, but your policeman friend whom you attacked has already informed his elder brother who is my boss in the city. So, they have decided to drop all charges because of me. However, they have decided that you would spend about four days inside so that you could learn a lesson.β He explained.
βBut uncleβ¦β
The line went dead. My uncle had hung up on me. That meant I was on my own. Oh God!! How did I get here? So, I was going to spend four long days in jail? I thought of Rose and badly wanted to see her again. I thought of Cominash. I wondered if she had heard about the whole thing. She would be so disappointed at me. Oh no!
Like a joke, night came, and I was still not released. No one came to see me, not even my uncleβs wife. I spent a lonely, cold and hungry night in my cell. I longed so much for my hostel room back in Buea. I regretted ever coming to the village in the first place and promised myself that I was never going to come to the village. This was my last and final trip.
When I finally fell asleep on the cold hard floor, I started dreaming. In my dream, I saw Naked and Rose holding hands and playing. They were at the beach, and they looked so happy together. I was in a car that was parked close to the beach, watching them. Out of bestial anger and jealousy, I brought my car to life, sped towards them, intending to run both of them over. When I got close to them, they vanished into thin air. Desperately, I tried to stop the car, but my brakes failed me. The car continued going at top speed and finally went into the ocean.
I started sinking and struggled in vain to get out of the car. I struggled and struggled but the worst happened, water started getting into the car and I started drowning. As I struggled to breathe, I woke up from sleep breathing hard. I was so thankful that it was a dream. There was no way of dying that I loathed and dreaded like drowning.
βThere is a visitor for you.β A policeman interrupted my thoughts, speaking through the iron bars of the cell.
βI donβt want to see anyone.β
βItβs a beautiful young lady. I hear that you like beautiful women, you even fight over them.β He laughed.
βGo to hell.β I spoke.
βBut you are in hell already. You are very fortunate that my boss is your father. I would have dealt with you. Anyway, if you donβt want to come and see your visitor, that is your problem.β
βWhat is her name?β I asked in a much softer tone.
βCominash.β
βCominash!!β I exclaimed. βI am on my way. Tell her I am coming.β
I got out of the now open cell and walked slowly to the reception of the police station. Cominash smiled broadly when she saw me.
βEbuka, I am sorry. I only heard about your predicament today.β She spoke.
βCominash, thank you for coming to see me. You are the only one who has come to see me since I was locked up. How are you?β
βI am not fine. How can I be fine when my sweetheart is in jail. Why did you attack a policeman?β
βI am sorry, I will explain everything to you.β I spoke.
βI heard it was because of a woman. Ebuka, is it true?β
βNo, babe. It is a lie. Forget those rumour mongers.β
βAnyway, I brought food for you.β
Cominash stayed with me until I finished eating. I was so grateful that she came to see me. I thanked her very much and made her promise to come and see me the following day. As she left, my uncleβs wife came, too. She brought me food and bottled water. She spoke to me at length, blaming me for causing trouble to myself, and for bringing disrepute to our family name. I apologized heartily to her.
βYour time is up, lover boy.β The policeman on guard spoke.
βMy friend, mind yourself.β I shouted at him.
βGo back to your cell, young man. If you care insult me and shout at me all you can. It wouldnβt change anything. You will spend another night here and there is nothing you can do.β
I walked back to my cell the policeman locked the door, all the time making faces and mocking me. I didnβt bother about him. I knew that some, day, I would have time to deal with him. I was going to tell my uncle about his unprofessional behaviour. I sat in my cell and thought deeply. This was the second day and Rose had still not come to see me. It was because of her that I got into this mess in the first place, and she still had not come to see me. I was angry and disappointed at her. Was she that callous and wicked? Then, I thought of the dream and my face fell.
Could it be that she and Naked were enjoying themselves out there just like I had seen in the dream? If that was the case, then, she would be in serious trouble with me. In fact, she would return all the money I had given her. I hoped, I really hoped that she was not playing games with me. If she was, even Naked would not be able to save her from my wrath.
It was my third day in jail now and by now, I was seriously homesick. I missed outside life, and badly wanted to get out and go back to my normal life. However, I still had a day to go since I was going to be there for four days. Cominash and my aunt came and went and I felt better. However, I would have felt much better if Rose had come. What was wrong with that girl? Why was she not coming to see me. I wished I could call or text her, but I couldnβt. My phones and other personal effects had been taken away from me as soon as I was brought to the station.
Later that day, the policeman on duty came and told me that I had a guest. I wondered who it could be. My aunt and Cominash had already come and gone. Who else would want to come and see me, especially when it was already past five in the evening. Could it be my uncle? But if it was my uncle, he would walk straight to my cell to see me. He was the boss of the place. He didnβt need to follow any protocols.
A thought came to my mind that made me smile broadly. It could be Rose. It could be my Rosy. She had finally come to see me. What had been keeping her for so long? Anyway, now that she had come, I would forgive her for the delay. Thank you for coming, Rosy. I had missed you so much.
βWhat is the gender of the person who wants to see me?β I asked the policeman. He was a gentleman, not like the other troublesome one.
βItβs a female, Sir.β
A female!! I thought to myself. Then it would definitely be Rose. I stood up, arranged my dress and followed the policeman to the reception area. I halted in shock when I saw the person who had come to see me. It wasnβt Rose.
It was Chancele.
