π«π December Rush Chapter Four:
I quickly detached from her and ran into the small bush that bordered their kitchen. She quickly adjusted her dress and went to the other side of the kitchen where her mother could not find her.
βCominash! Cominash!!β Her mother called. βWhere is that stupid girl?β
βI am here, Mum.β She answered from in front of the kitchen.
βWhere are you coming from?β Her mum asked, walking back to the direction of her voice.
βNowhere, Mum. I just went behind to pee.β She lied.
βIndeed!! For how long? Were you peeing for ten people? You this girl, I am beginning to suspect you. Now, get into the house.β
When I was sure that her mum had gone back into the house, I left my hiding place, checked that the money was still in my pocket, and ran home. I got home just as my aunt was about to shut the door for the night. I walked in breathing heavily, and as usual, she looked at me suspiciously but chose to say nothing.
I went into my bedroom, locked the door and counted the money again. It was exactly fifty thousand Frs. Wow!! What a way to make quick money. Even government ministers didnβt make up to that amount on an average day. But Cominash had given me that and still gave me kpekus to add on top.
Maybe I should contact Chancele too. I could make more money from her. However, I decided against it. Contacting Chancele would mean bringing her back into my life again. That would complicate things for me on New Year Day. So, I decided that I would not.
It was now the day I was supposed to meet with Rosy. I needed to get her feedback. That afternoon, I texted her to remind her about our meeting later in the day. She confirmed the meeting and we agreed that it would once again, be under the mango tree at the church compound. My anticipation was very great, and I couldnβt wait for evening to come.
At exactly 6:00 PM, she texted me and told me that she was already there. I hurriedly got dressed, took a bike and went to meet her. She was all smiles when she saw me coming and that gave me hope. After the normal pleasantries, I went straight to business.
βSo, Rosy, what is it going to be. Have you accepted my proposal?β I asked.
βYou make it sound like a marriage proposal.β She replied.
βWell, that is how these things start?β
βAnyway, before I say anything, I want to ask you a question.β She spoke.
βGo right ahead, my lady.β
βWhat if I already have a boyfriend?β
βWell, as disappointing as it would be, I will respect the fact that you are taken already. Do you have a boyfriend?β I asked, afraid of the answer.
βNo, I do not. I was just intriguing you.β She laughed.
βAhh!! You almost gave me high blood pressure. So, does that mean that you are with me?β
βYes, I will be your girlfriend, but there are conditions attached.β
βYes.β
βNo sex for now.β
βWhy?β
βBecause I need time to study you.β
βAlright, there is no problem. I will prove to you that I am worthy of your love.β I spoke confidently.
About thirty minutes later, we decided to go home. My happiness was not complete. My success was a mitigated one. How can Rosy say that there would be no sex in the relationship for now?
How long did she want to stay before giving me what I wanted. There was no time. This was Christmas holiday and we all had just about three weeks to be in the village. We had already spent one week and were now in the second week. Soon, she would go back to Ngaoundere where she schooled, and I would go back to Buea.
I was half angry. As far as I was concerned, she had muddled the line between refusing and accepting me. What sort of foolish condition is that? Anyway, she was a woman and I was a man. I knew I would look for a means to get her to change her mind.
It was just a matter of time. By the time I started spending the money I collected form Cominash on her, she would know that I am a big boy and change her mind. In fact, she would even be the one to start begging me. I smiled at the thought of that.
Because I was bored and angry, I texted Cominash on Whatsapp. I wanted to find out if we could see that night.
βHi baby.β I wrote and hated myself for saying that.
βHi bae, how are you?β
βI am good, may I see you tonight?β
βItβs not possible na. Itβs late already and my parents are home.β She declined.
βSo, what do you want me to do now?β I asked, disappointed.
βWhat do you want?β
βYou know.β
βBut you had it just about two days ago.β
βHave you forgotten that I didnβt finish? I didnβt even release. Your mum came and interrupted us. Can I come behind your house and wait for you?β
βNo, my parents wonβt allow me to leave. I donβt want us to be caught. Remember that day was a close call. We came close to being caught. If my mother hadnβt announced her coming, we would have been caught.β
βItβs alright, I will just manage. But if I go and hold my uncleβs goat now, donβt blame me oh.β I spoke in jest and she laughed hard at this.
βDonβt worry, sweetheart. New Year Day is around the corner. On that day, we will have all the freedom. I will give you as much as you want. In fact, you will have it back-to-back, okay.β
βI have heard.β I replied grudgingly. βI have to go now, bye.β
βBye, sweetheart.β
I looked at the phone in anger. Who was she calling sweetheart. If only she knew how I hated her calling me that. Anyway, I couldnβt blame her. I blamed myself for going back to her. If not for that foolish Rosy, would I have even gone back to her? Maybe I should just abandon all these girls and go back to the city. I had better and classier girls there.
It was New Year Day now. I had spent a large part on New Yearβs Eve in church. My uncle and wife could not tolerate me staying home on a day like that. That would have been a perfect day to spend with Cominash, but my aunt had insisted that we must all be in church for the cross over night. So, I had no choice, I had to go. So, on the New Year Day proper, I was feeling very tired because I had stayed up late last night. So, I decided to take a small nap.
After about two hours, I woke up from sleep afraid that the day had already passed. I remembered a friend of mine last holiday who had great plans on New Year Day. Instead of him to wait until evening to start drinking, he went and met a group of guys in his neighbourhood who were drinking very early in the morning. They gave him too much alcohol. He drank, fell into deep sleep and only woke up early the next day when New Year Day had already passed. He was very angry with himself.
I checked my phone and it was 4:00 PM. It was time to hit the popular village club. I called Cominash to tell her that I would be going out with some friends. So, she shouldnβt check on me. She should wait until I call her. Because she didnβt want to annoy me, she agreed. I dressed up really good, stood in front of the mirror and admired myself with joy.
βDo you know who I look like now, Chike?β I asked my cousin.
βYou look like Uzor Arukwe.β
βWrong, think again.β
βOkay, you look like Frederick Leonard.β
βWrong again. Please, guess one more time.β
βI am tired of guessing. Please, just tell me.β Chike had gotten impatient.
βOkay, I will tell you. I look like Ebuka.β
βWhich Ebuka?β
βHow many Ebukas do you know. I am talking about myself, young man. Who else could look better than me.β
Chike shook his head in frustration and went to meet his friends who had come to visit. I went to the living room and told my aunt that I would be going out now and would return late, but she disappointed me.
βNot so soon, young man. Your uncleβs friends would be coming to see us soon. You have to be around to serve them.β She spoke.
βWhat? Aunt, Canβt Chike and Bessem serve them? I have to meet Roβ¦I mean I have to meet some friends.β
βYou want to meet who? Finish what you were about to say. Who do you want to meet?β
βNobody, Aunt.β
βI hope so, I really hope so. Let me tell you, if you go and cause peopleβs children to fight again today, just know that you are on your own. I will hand you over to them when they come.β
βHahahaha! Auntie, there is no such a thing like that. Nothing will happen, please.β
My uncleβs friends took forever to come. When they finally did, Chike, Bessem and I served them food and drinks. As they were eating, I disappeared. As I was going to Dream Land Bar, the most popular village club, I called Rose several times but to my surprise, anger and disappointment, she didnβt pick. I wondered what could have gone wrong. We were supposed to go the club together to spend the day. My body was itching to spend the money I had collected from Cominash.
I decided that since Rose was not picking her calls, I would just go to the club, secure a seat for two, get a bottle of drink and wait for her to call me later when she saw my missed call. Haven made up my mind about that, I quickened my pace. I didnβt want to take a bike because that would mean I would get there earlier than I would have loved. I preferred to walk hoping that Rose would call me before I got there.
My phone rang and I picked with excitement. It wasnβt Rose, it was Cominash. Vexed, I picked the call and tried to sound a normal as possible. However, my mind was boiling with anger.
βCominash baby.β
βEbuka, where are you?β She asked.
βI am still at home. I thought I told you that I would call you later?β
βYes, you did. I was just calling to check on you. Did I do anything wrong?β
βNo, baby. You didnβt. Sorry for my tone.β I tried to calm her down.
βIt is alright. Ebuka. So, we will see later, right?β
βYeah.β
The call dropped and I continued walking to Dreamland. Rose had still not called and by now I was very vexed. In fact, I was so vexed that I thought of cancelling her own program and call Cominash instead. But how could I do that? Rose was a beautiful girl that I planned to use to intimidate those local village girls. I needed to use her to intimidate Naked too.
I got into Dream Land and recoiled back in shock. I had seen something that was very upsetting to me. I couldnβt believe what I was seeing. I peeped through the door just to confirm that what I was seeing was real, and indeed it was.
My knees felt weak, my head started spinning. No, this was not happening. No doubt she was not picking my calls. Sitting comfortably around one of the tables of the place, were Rose and Naked and a few other friends.
Could Rose be that girl Naked had been talking about? Oh no! I was finished. Maybe I was dreaming. Why would Rose do a thing like that to me. What was she doing with Naked Wire? I was seriously sweating now, but I still hung on one small hope that their meeting was just a random coincidence.
I tried to convince myself that there was nothing wrong. However, in order to be very sure, I needed to talk to Naked. I texted him on WhatsApp, watched as he read my text, smiled, got up from his seat and walked out of the club to meet me outside. We stood in front of a blue car that was parked outside and talked.
βEbuka, what are you doing here. Come inside and get yourself a drink. It is on me.β He spoke, happy to see me.
βNaked, I would do that momentarily. However, I need to ask something from you.β
βYes, go ahead.β
βThat lady sitting with you, Rose. Who is she to you?β I asked, afraid of the answer.
βOh! You know Rose? She is my girlfriend. That is the girl I told you about.β
βThe one you said you met her on your way to the village?β
βYes. Is anything the matter?β Naked asked, squinting his eyes.
Before I could answer, Rose showed up behind us. She was speaking as she came. She had a glass of wine in her hand.
βNaked, what are you doing outside here. Why donβt you ask your friend to join us inside? It is rude to just abandon people like that.β
βI am sorry, honey.β Naked spoke, turning around to face her. βPlease, meet my good friend, Ebuka.β
I turned and our eyes met. In shock, she dropped the glass she was holding, and it shattered on the paved parking lot of the place.
