Tracy waked into the shrine, and sat down on the mat the chief priest asked her to sit on.
He walked into the inner part of the shrine, and returned with a calabash that contained different herbs and incense.
βTake this, pick seven out of this bunch and roll it around your head seven times.
βPut this in your mouth, and chew with your eyes closed. You must not open your eyes, until you have swallowed everything.
βHere is the last one. Rub it all over your body, ensuring that it touches every part of your body.
βDo not let any part of it, touch the ground, and do not let any of it remain in the container.
βYou are to remain in this mat these three market days. You will not be allowed to eat the foods prepared outside this shrine, neither will you drink any other waters, but the one from this sacred potβ he told her, after making some incantations.
Tracy nodded in agreement, ready to do whatever she was asked to do, to ensure that she didnβt have to face whatever the spirit planned to do to her again.
She picked the alligator pepper, and did as she was told, and was about to throw the herb she was told to chew with closed eyes into her mouth, when the chief priest began to speak.
βOne more thing! You are not to step a foot out of this mat, until the rituals are complete.
βNo matter what happens, do not make any spontaneous movement that can get you out of this mat because that will mean instant deΓ£th.
βUloma will surely come around when the rituals begin. But no matter how scary itβll get, no matter what she does, and no matter the form she takes, do not let her force you to make any sudden movementβ the chief priest told Tracy, and got her affirming that she understood what he had just said.
βHold on, there is something I left out. Iβll be backβ the chief priest said, and walked back in his dramatic way, into the shrine
When the chief priest returned to the inner part of his shrine to get whatever it was that he said he needed to get, Tracy got out her phone that had been vibrating to indicate an incoming call. She put it on silent mode, to ensure that it didn’t call the chief priest’s attention.
She knew it would certainly be Bruce calling to know what was going on, so she wasnβt surprised to see that it was indeed him.
βI canβt speak now my love. Iβm already in the shrine, and about to begin the rituals.
βIβm supposed to remain on a special mat for the specific number of days Iβll be here, and Iβll neither eat regular food nor drink water from anywhere else.
βThe chief priest has laid out so many rules, but Iβm willing to face it all. Itβs going to be fine eventuallyβ read her text message to Bruce.
She put her phone away, and sat down quietly to wait for the return of the chief priest.
She felt really sad that she was going to stay away from Bruce for those number of days sheβd be in the shrine, but since being there was going to make it possible for her to be with the man she loves forever, she was willing to make the sacrifice.
Ozonge returned to the main shrine and began to pour libations, telling his ancestors about how he is about to do what he had to do.
βThis is for you Ochalia! Take this Oketalia, and to you my fatherβs fathers, here you go!
βToday is that day when your son fulfils that, for which he is born. Today, I proceed with the rituals that will keep Ulomaβs voice and her cacophonous melodies, silenced in my generation.
βBe with me from the start to the end, and may this ritual be as successful as it had been from the times of my fathersβ he said, and poured the drink in his bottle on the statues and the other objects he considered sacred.
He finished with all the drama and the preliminary moves he had to make, then walked up to Tracy and asked her to begin with the rituals.
Ozonge walked out of the shrine, to sound the gong that announced the commencement of the rituals.
Every child born in that community, gets to be told about that special gong, and how important it was for anyone to keep whatever business they had with the shrine postponed, until the concluding gong was sounded.
In each generation, the chief priest of Ozonge shrine, got to perform that ritual just once. And it was known that the one who had to pass through the rituals, always came from Stephanieβs lineage.
Everyone was told and made to believe that once the gong sounded and the rituals began, any mortal who as much as made an appearance in the shrine, would be cursed with a double fold of what the one getting cleansed is afflicted with.
Tracy had been told this story before, and she knew that whatever happened, she just had to get the rituals done with.
βWhat will be scary about passing three nights in a dark hut, compared to all that I have had to see all these years?β she thought as she began to do the things the chief priest asked her to do.
One after the other, Tracy continued to perform the tasks she had been given, and by nightfall, she was in the last stage of the activities lined up for that day.
Tracy refused to close her eyes to sleep, even when she felt very tired and sleepy, because she knew Uloma will come with her songs, the moment she tried to close her eyes.
She lay quietly on her mat, and decided to let her thoughts accompany her that night.
The thoughts of the day she met Bruce came readily to her mind, and she began to smile unconsciously, remembering how he had come to the village stream with some other corps members for sight seeing, and stood transfixed on a spot, staring at her without any attempt to be discreet about it.
Their case had been a case of love at first sight, and even though Tracy wasnβt his regular kind of girl, Bruce was stuck to her charm.
He asked her for her phone number to be able to reach her afterwards, but she didnβt own a phone.
Bruce was too mesmerized by Tracy to allow her go without a means of reaching her again, so he compelled her to accept his phone.
βI canβt do it. How can I accept a gift from a stranger? and then, itβs not just a gift but your personal phone.
βWhat if you have committed a crime and want me to be held responsible for it?
βHow can I tell that you didnβt steal this phone, and youβre looking for a means to get me in trΓ²uble?β she had asked him, making him more interested in her.
βYou know in your heart Tracy, your heart is telling you, and you can hear your spirit affirming it that Iβm not a stranger to you.
βYes my dear, even from the way you look at me, I can already tell that it was predestined that we meet today.
βPlease do not try to distort the designs of the Maker, whose web of connection, connected you and I from the day we were bornβ Bruce told her, speaking in a way that was not just strange, but surprising to him.
Tracy thought of the times they had made unending promises, and the times they vowed to be together forever, no matter what happened, and a tear escaped her eye.
βDear God, please let this ritual be successful, and let me never have to be away from Bruce againβ she prayed, right before she began to feel movements around her.
βOh, she didnβt wait for me to close my eyes in sleep before she came tonight?β Tracy thought, and closed her eyes tightly, pursing her lips to keep them from singing.
She waited to hear the songs, but she was feeling instead.
Yes, a hand was unmistakably crawling over her body.
She wanted to scream, to run out of the hut, but she had been told sheβd die if she left the mat before the rituals got completed, so she held the scream back, and tried not to shake.
The hand continued to peruse her body, tickling her in a way she had never felt before.
She had tied the red cloth on her waist, leaving her chest bare, because the substances the chief priest asked her to apply to her chest was said to forbid getting in contact with any clothing items, until it dried up properly.
She gladly tied the wrapper to her waist and left her brΓͺasts bare because, not only was the hut pitch black, she wasnβt expecting anyone there all through the night.
The hand continued to touch her, sometimes lightly on her hair, then it would go down through her face to her chest region.
Then, it would get off her instantly, making it seem as if she had been hallucinating.
After a while, the hand would return to her body, and with time, it was beginning to make circles round her youthful and full brΓͺast.
Waves of electrifying currents began to course through her, and she began to wriggle in confusion.
βWhat is happening to me? What is going on?β she asked herself as the hand began to massage her breasts, sending cold chills down her spine.
Tracy had never been touched the way she was getting touched, and she was finding it hard to understand what was going on with her.
βDonβt move, lay still and allow the spirits complete the cleansingβ she heard a voice say from a distance, after the funny and strange touches stopped momentarily.
The voice was unmistakably the chief priest’s, but Tracy didnβt know how he knew from the room he was sleeping in, that something was happening to her, so she kept quiet.
The movement over her body didnβt happen again, until very much later, when she felt the presence again.
This time, the hands were consistent and committed to getting the job done.
She began to feel dizzy and giddy all of a sudden, feeling so helpless and unable to do anything to stop the hand from roaming over her body.
βStop, you spirit of the dark, do not hover over me any more!β Tracy screamed in Γ£nger as she felt her entire body getting rummaged.
βThis is the will of the gods. Donβt fight it!β She heard the chief priest’s voice, say over her head.
βFrom the times of our fathers, Ulomaβs voice had only been able to be silenced for a generation through this ritual.
βYou will be able to live again like other girls after this ritual. But until it is done, until you are made a woman by me, you will continue to hear those voices and continue to get tΓ΄rmentedβ the chief priest said, then lowered his body on top of her.
βGet off me you son of a cursed man. How dare you? Who told you Tracy is going to let any man have his way with her?β Tracy bellowed, trying to fight her way away from him.
βActually, weβre both offspring of the cΓ»rsed people, and we can only have our freedom after this copulation.
βMy father did it with your mother, my grandfather did it with you grandmother, and my son will still do it with your daughter.
βMy father told me that this night will come. And after you have started the ritual, if you do not get deflowered and made to conceive the daughter than can take over the curse, you will surely diΓ«.
βPlease lay still and allow nature take itβs courseβ the chief priest told Tracy, kicking her legs apart, and positioning himself firmly between her legs.
βLeave me alone. I want to diΓ«β she screamed as he began to tear off her panties.
She tried to push him off, but the man was too powerful for her.
He was already totally unclad, and his fully charged front tail was charging Γ ggressively at her, poking her thighs as she struggled to free herself from his grip.
