Bruceβs mother walked towards his son to ask why he was standing so aloof, when it was his best friendβs traditional wedding ceremony. He seemed so absentminded, and if she didn’t know that he was really close to Drake, she would have imagined that she was unhappy with Drake, from the way he looked at him
She couldnβt understand why her son had been acting all strange for quite a while, always doing the exact opposite of things he ordinarily did.
He had been doing everything to stop her from visiting his house for so long, and unlike their usual way of visiting her together, she hadnβt seen him with Drake in a really long while.
A number of times, she had asked after Drake, wondering why he didn’t come with him to visit her, like they always did, but he always had a reason for Drake’s visible absence from his sides.
Then on a day that was meant to be his friend’s happiest day, her son was looking so detached from Drake, almost like he was forced to be there.
βIs everything okay Bruce? You donβt look wellβ his mother asked him, taking a seat beside him.
Bruce assured his mother that all was well, and that he was only a little bit under the weather.
βItβs okay son. I know you will feel a lot better when you also get your own wife, just like your friend has got for himself.
βIt is such a beautiful thing to get yourself a befitting wife. See how seamlessly the marriage has been conductedβ Bruceβs mother cooed.
Bruce shook his head and had a wry smile on his face as he listened to his mother extol Drake for having chosen a befitting and good wife, and how that the couple looked so good together.
βMum, Drakeβs mother must be looking for you now and she may not know that you’re here with me, when you should be with her, greeting the guests.
βPlease donβt make her have to miss you for so longβ Bruce advised his mother, looking so perturbed by his worries and guilt that his mother imagined that he was feeling bad for his inability to have successfully married the woman he wanted to marry earlier.
She was so sure that his friend’s marriage ceremony must have reminded him of his supposed failed attempt to marry.
Of course, she didn’t have a way of knowing that Bruce was actually feeling so bad that he wasnβt able to convince Patricia not to embark on the rollercoaster ride she was headed for.
He knew about Samantha and Drake, but felt it may not go down well with Patricia, if he announced such a bad news to her when she had been so cool with Drake for so long.
βIf only I knew that she was already aware of Samanthaβs shΓ meful affairs with Drake, then I would have tried to talk her out of going on with a wedding with a man, whose heart and mind now belongs to another
Maybe, if I hadn’t been so preoccupied with worries about how it will affect her if I bore such a terrible news to her, and faced the reality that it is more hurtful to allow a child dip her hand inside a pot of boiling water, than make her cry for stopping her from entering the kitchenβ Bruce regretted.
His mother looked at his sad countenance and stood up to leave, after assuring him that he would sooner that later be like his friend Drake.
βBe careful what you wish for mum. You may be praying for the last thing you wish to happen to youβ Bruce told his mother.
βRelax son, I know what I am talking about. You too, will have reasons to be happy soon. Trust me, it will unfold soon.
βHow is Samantha anyways? Why isnβt she here with you?β his mother asked him, pausing suddenly as a new thought hit her.
Drake told her that he had been able to out Samantha and Bruce back together, but in all these while, she hadn’t seen Samantha with Bruce.
And just like she asked her son, she had expected to see Samantha with him in the wedding party. be
βSamantha? Why would she be here with me?β Bruce asked his mother with raised brows. It was clear that he didn’t have any idea what she meant by what she had just said.
While he was saying Samantha, he never introduced her as someone he wanted to be with forever, so she wasn’t meant to even come up as someone important while they talked.
And even though he knew his mother didn’t want him thinking of marrying Tracy again, he couldn’t understand what gave her the impression that he had returned to Samantha
βDidnβt Drake tell me that he has successfully brought you two back together?
βDid Drake lie to me, when he asked me not to bother to come into the matter and not to trouble you again because he has already got you together with Samantha again?β his mother asked in confusion.
A smile formed on his face when realization hit him. He just couldnβt control his desire to see how Drake would explain things to his mother, so he pulled his mother towards Drake who was on the phone, somewhere in a corner, while his wife greeted guests.
Drake’s phone had been ringing all.along, so as soon as Patricia’s father finished with the formalities that made Patricia officially his wife, and he had stepped out to do the couple’s dance, he found a way to meander, to take his call.
And of course, it was Samantha calling to let him know that she wanted to see him as soon as he could get away from where he was.
“But Sam, I was with you the whole of yesterday, wouldn’t it be fair that you allowed me finish with this marriage before you start calling like this?
“What would I say, if my wife found out that I have been on the phone with you, while our guests waited greet me?” Drake asked unhappily.
“Oh wonderful, you left here a few hours ago, and now you’re already rubbing my face with ‘my wife shΓ¬t?’
“And you think this is what I have to face from now on?” Samantha asked angrily.
“Okay, I take that back, it didn’t come out nice. I won’t ever refer to her as my wife when I’m talking with you. But please my love, do not pressure me on a day like this.
“You know I will run to your sides as soon as I can, but I just can’t be watching my back on a date like this, it’s not right” he was saying to her when he heard Bruce’s voice behind him.
βHey Drake, mother was asking about Samantha whom she says she entrusted into your hands to do some stuffs for.
βShe was asking why Samantha isnβt here, so I felt you would be in a better position to tell her, since you practically live in her house now.
βI would have told mother that she failed to come because she must have expected that you married her before marrying Patricia, since both of you are more suited, but I donβt know for sure if thatβs the only reason she didnβt show up
βSo go ahead Drake, and tell mother what she wants to know while I head out to do the important things I have to doβ Bruce said, then turned around and left his mother and Drake looking at him with jaws dropped in shock.
He heard Drake stammering, as he tried to make some explanations, but he was already done being around Drake and his mother, so he got into his car and began to make his way out of the village.
There was no way on earth he was going to stick around, wasting his time, when he knew that his wife would be needing his attention at home.
They agreed that she didnβt need to attend Drakeβs wedding because Bruce didnβt think it was okay to allow his mother meet his wife for the first time, in a public place, when he knew how dramatic she can be.
Plus, his wife didnβt really like being anywhere around a man who could switch to his best friendβs ex, even when he had a wedding coming up shortly.
Drake and Mrs. Ikenga’s conversation expectedly ended with βI am so disappointed in youβ followed by some other Γ ngry words before Mrs. Ikenga made his way away from where they had been standing.
But before the woman took a walk, Drake had also managed to report Bruce to her too.
He made sure to inform the woman that his son was already married to the girl she called a village wΓ―tch, and the girl may have used some extra powers to make him get in bed with Samantha, just to keep her away from Bruce.
He also didnβt fail to mention to the Γ ngry woman that Bruce had fought in the shrine, just because of the girl, as a way of getting back at Bruce, for telling his mother about him.and Samantha, in the way he did.
Mrs. Ikenga called doctor Jude to ask how he could have accompanied Bruce to complete Tracy’s marriage rite, without her knowledge.
One thing led to another, and they were able to surmise that Bruce must have got the strange injury Jude saw on him back then.
So, with the anger and worry about what the supposed village wΓ―tch has done to her son, Mrs. Ikenga began to make her way to her sonβs house unannounced.
