👫 Cacophonous Melody Episode One: 💞
🎵 Oh oh oh, the tales have remained untold, and the story unheard🎵 Tracy suddenly began to sing, arching her head in a way that suggested she was listening to someone to get the lyrics she was singing.
🎵The world is watching, and the spirits are waiting. The things we do when no man is watching, is all but an open secret, because in the long run, we’re all going there 🎵 she continued to sing, her voice sounding very strange, those who knew her well enough, could tell that something was not just off about a bride singing with innuendos on her wedding day, but that she was sounding as if something else was singing through her vocal cords
Some people began to exchange worried glances, others were shrugging their shoulders as they recalled that her lyrics were always weird, and only came on her marriage days, that never ended well, while another set of people, listened with rapt attention to see if they could grab a meaning from her songs.
She continued to sing in her strange tone, and like before, she soon began to turn around in circles, looking everywhere as if in search of someone.
“No! Wait for me!” she screamed and fell flat, losing consciousness immediately.
“This can’t be happening again. Gods of our land! Who did we offend?” Stephanie, her mother lamented sorrowfully, wailing, as she rushed to her daughter’s sides, wishing she could just wake up and realize that it had only been a dream.
She had become an object of mockery among the women folk, some people in the women’s forum had even suggested excommunicating her because of the shame and embàrrassment she and her daughter kept bringing the women folk, each time they gathered for a marriage ceremony.
Stephanie held her daughter to herself, crying, but nobody seemed to care or make any attempt to help her; they all had angry or scared looks.
Chief Scot, her father sat on his seat, shaking his legs vigorously and looking up at the sky with his hands folded across his chest.
He was fighting hard to keep the tears that had already forced themselves to his eyelids, from falling, because as a Chief in his community, he knew what it meant to be found crying in an open place.
But the pains of the shàme he was now feeling was too overwhelming for him to handle. Scot had begged his wife and daughter to save him this shàme, and his wife had acted as if he was a pessîmist.
“Are you seriously giving up on our daughter too? I don’t want to believe this honey. How can you suggest something as prepòsterous as asking my daughter to just begin to cohabit with a man who isn’t traditionally married to her, because you believe the crazy things people have been saying?
“My daughter will get married, and no matter what you or anyone says, this time, there won’t be any problems, because wherever that voice is coming from, I will have it completely chained and bound before that day” his wife had said.
Scot’s hands were tied, and he just couldn’t see himself fighting his wife’s and only daughter’s decision to have her traditionally married to the handsome young man that had refused to hear a thing about forgetting about Tracy.
Bruce was from an entirely different ethnic group from Tracy. And he had met her when he was posted to her community for National Youth Service, a scheme that was created by the Nigerian government in a bid to reconstruct, reconcile and rebuild the country after the Nigerian Civil wàr.
“Honey, do something! My daughter is dying” Stephanie cried inconsolably, but Scot’s mind was far away. He was several miles away from where they all sat, thinking of what he was going to do about the melody his daughter only sang at night, and when they had important occasions.
At night, his daughter always woke up singing strange songs, and saying things that made them frightened. He had assumed like he was told, that after a while, those things will go away, but with each passing day, Tracy continued to manifest new levels of strange acts.
While his wife was beckoning on him to help her, his mind was on the things his friends had advised him to do, so he didn’t even notice when Bruce walked past him.
Bruce walked up to Tracy and her mum, and bent over her to give a helping hand, but his mother found her way to his sides in a flash, and gave him a rough pull.
“What are you trying to do? Did you see anyone else around this girl and her mother? Did I not tell you that there was something eerily off about this girl?
“If you do not want me to create a bigger scene here Bruce, come with me and your kinsmen now!” She told her son, but he hesitated for a few more seconds, and got the troubled mother screàming so loudly, it appeared she wanted to have oesophagus tampered with.
People started drifting out of Chief Scot’s compound as yet another marriage ceremony had ended in chaos.
Chief Paulson got up and walked up to his long time friend, to express his sympathy before heading out.
So many others didn’t bother to be so courteous, they strode out without looking back, feeling offended for having spent the time they would have spent on their farms, sitting in wait for a wedding that didn’t hold yet again.
Women could be seen leaving in groups as they talked about how Stephanie had failed to take her daughter to the sacred Ozonge shrine for cleansing as demanded by the chief priest.
“This is the last time I’d leave important things I’m doing at home to come here for a marriage ceremony we all know will not still end well” Geraldine the village women’s leader said emphatically as she walked on with Meg and Roselle.
“But why has she failed to let Tracy stay with Ozonge the great herbalist for the stipulated time and rid the community of this embàrrassment we all have to face whenever a new suitor chose to take the risk of marrying her?” Roselle asked in bewilderment.
“I heard she thinks Tracy is too beautiful and attractive to be left in the custody of a man for three market days” Meg said with an angry face. It was clear she despised Stephanie’s reasoning.
“I mean what’s the use of her beauty and charm if all she brings is shame and embàrrassment whenever any man tries to perform marriage rites on her?” Meg lamented.
“What annoys me the most is the fact that while other maidens in the village are waiting eagerly for just one suitor, she has suitors running around her, tripping on each other as they struggle to get her to accept a marriage proposal; a marriage ceremony they know will still end like other ones!” Geraldine fumed.
“But, I know just what to do. This has to stop already! Stephanie must take her daughter to the sacred Ozonge shrine this time. The young men in the village must see her married off so they can choose from the other eligible maidens” she concluded as they reached the great cherry tree, the entrance to her house.
The women bade each other farewell and dispersed, each moving towards her house.
The village was agog with the news of Tracy’s failed marriage yet again. While some concluded she must be an ogbanje, some felt her parents must have offended the gods of the land, yet another group felt she was destined to be married to the gods. In all, they “knew” she was a cursed child
