ππ Birthday Present Part Three:
One day when I was sitting in the parlor with my elder sister and instructing the maids on what to do, Hephzibah walked quietly to me with one hand clinging on to her necklace.
Hephzibah was a naturally quiet kid (I blame it on the fact that she didn’t learn how to say a complete sentence till she was five) but she seemed to be even quieter these days, I didn’t let that bother me, my guess was that she was just going through a phase and she will come out of it eventually.
“Mummy” she whispered. She immediately had my attention.
“Yes sweetheart” I answered her but she took a while to start talking.
“My necklace” she started in her usual soft tone.
“What about it?”
“I think it’s talking to me”
I looked at my elder sister who had stopped what she was doing on her phone on hearing this strange confession.
“Necklaces can’t talk, you know that right?” My elder sister said. I knocked the head of one of the maids closest to me, they were busy talking lowly amongst themselves and I couldn’t help but assume that they were talking about my daughter.
“All of you get out of here, smelling things” all the maids dispersed at the tone of my voice, leaving just my elder sister, Hephzibah and I in the parlor.
“But this one is talking to me” Hephzibah replied, her eyes looking as large as an almond.
My elder sister and I shared a look of confusion then the perfect reply came up.
“Is it talking like Sofia’s necklace?” I asked her, she nodded.
“It is possible that you have Sofia’s necklace Hephzibah and that is wonderful because you can talk with all the Disney princesses in the world” My elder sister added once she got what I was driving at.
There was a slight frown on Hephzibah face that showed that she wasn’t getting what we were saying.
“Disney princesses are not real, its just a cartoon. I’m not a baby” she shot at us. For a while neither my sister nor I knew what to say.
“Hephzibah I’m sure it’s just your imagination and it’s good to imagine things okay” I told her.
She glanced at me then my sister and walked away without another word her hand still holding on to the necklace.
After this, the next weeks became hell. Hephzibah would do unexplainable things like; piercing her classmate’s hand with a compass, she once cut a huge part of Sophie’s hair when she was asleep and as a result of how badly she cut Sophie’s hair I had to take Sophie to barbing salon to level everything and this was just little compared to the other stuffs she did.
As if that wasn’t enough when she was asked why she did it, she would say the necklace told her to. I got frustrated and tried to remove the necklace from her neck, God, the way she screamed and kicked so violently made me abandon the mission.
I didn’t know what to do about her recent behavior because I refused to believe her claims and tales of the necklace telling her on how to behave so naughty. The only time I heard about a necklace talking was in cartoons and this is real life na.
Slowly she stopped talking to anyone in the house, even if she was spoken to she won’t do more than to shake or nod her head. She began to isolate herself from her sisters and every time she would be seen holding the necklace pendant. Sometimes I could have sworn that I saw her whispering to the pendant.
But I myself didn’t know if I was just imagining things.
