🙎 A Daughter’s Revenge EPISODE SEVENTY SIX:
Sadly, Steve actually took his life himself.
He took a pôisinous substance to perfect the taboo.
The container of the sniper was there on the ground as evidence. Even some of the white substance was littered on the ground.
People cried their eyes out.
Martha’s mother-in-law was rushed to the hospital. She had slumped earlier.
Martha cried bitterly as if she wanted to kîll herself. Thank goodness sympathizers were around to console her.
Mr. Pere, Steven’s father, had involved the police.
The police arrived at the scene. They took photographs of the scene, collected all the evidence and took the body away for autopsy.
Meanwhile, Steve’s parents were accusing Martha of kîlling her husband.
However, Martha was arrested and detained pending the outcome of the police investigations.
But after the investigations, Martha was found not guilty. So she was released.
Steve’s body was released for burial.
And he was given a befitting burial.
Meanwhile, Martha didn’t attend her husband’s burial ceremony. She was forbidden to attend the burial. The youths even threatened to kîll her if she dared show up at the burial ceremony which took place in his father’s hometown.
Weeks later, Martha was thrown out of her husband’s house. Her husband’s people came and threw her things out like an outcast.
Although Martha had the capacity to fight them tooth and nail, she decided to let the sleeping dog be. After all, what’s that she would be fighting for that she didn’t have? Nothing! Her business was doing perfectly well. Was it a house? She had her personal house. So she packed her things and peacefully moved back to her house for peace to rain.
Martha was: broken. Shattered. But her friend Mary was there for her. She kept encouraging her not to question God. That God knows the best. Because she was already questioning God on why He allowed her to be going through hèll all her life.
Martha had started noticing a severe back ache. She always feels weak and dizzy and food always loses taste in her mouth. The worst part of it all was that Martha could no longer enter the kitchen because the smell of food always made her dizzy.
Martha started experiencing these signs for the past two weeks now.
The last thing Martha could think of was being pregnant. Because she had already accepted her fate of dying of barrenness.
Besides, she had never missed her menstruation.
So Martha treated malaria and typhoid based on self-medication.
But the symptoms continued.
This time around, she finally decided to visit a doctor to know what was wrong with her.
Guess what!
Martha was actually pregnant. She was almost three months gone.
How come Martha was pregnant? Almost three months pregnant. How did it happen? Because even when her late husband, Steve, was alive, they lived like cats and rats in the house. So who was responsible?
~~~FLASHBACK~~~
Martha glanced at the wall clock and it was almost 1:00AM.
She nodded her head and concentrated on her marijunà she was taking. She had a bottle of gin on the table.
Ever since Steve had stopped talking to Martha, she had found comfort again in smoke and drink. The dua had become her companion in that lonely and empty house. In fact, Martha had almost emptied her husband’s bar.
Martha wasn’t expecting her husband home that day. Because he hardly comes home these days.
Amid her smoking and drinking party, she heard a knock on the door.
Fearlessly, she went and opened the door even without asking herself who that could be.
It happened to be Steve, her husband. And he came home very drunk at that ungodly hour.
‘How dare you keep me waiting in my house?,’ Steve asked, staggering.
‘You should be grateful that I opened the door for you. After all, you had your own keys into the house. Or are mine the one opening the door for you all these years,’ Martha queried back, very drunk too.
‘How dare you smoke and drink in my house?,’ Steve had to ask. Because, despite his drunknes, he still noticed how smoke clouded every nook and cranny of his sitting room.
‘What moral justification do you have to question me on that? Or have you ever seen a pot calling the kettle black?,’ Martha replied and headed towards her room.
‘So you have grown too much wing to walk out on me, ehn?,’ Steve asked.
‘Come and beat me na,’ Martha said while heading to her room.
‘Okay. Tonight, you will tell me whether you are the man of the house or I am the man of the house…’, Steve was saying while following her, seriously staggering.
Steve followed her wife to their room. That same room he had abandoned for the past two months now.
One thing led to another, they ended up fighting. Though not the physical fight;
But a sèxuàl fight.
It was a memorable sèx that the two drunken lovers-in-enmity had that night.
But their accidental sèxuàl rumble could not bring them together. As their enmity continued still until Steve took his life.
~~~BACK TO REALITY ~~
No doubt, that accidental sèx encounter was what led to the pregnancy. Martha thought as much because ever since she got married to her late husband, no man has ever seen her nàkèdness except Steve.
‘God why did you do this to me? Why did it take you so long to bless me with the fruit of the womb? Why did you allow me to go through all this hèll before finally remembering me? My husband is no more. He ended it himself. Then who will be the father of this child? Tell me, what is the essence of this pregnancy? ..’, Martha was crying amid sober reflection. It was midnight. She had the picture of Steve with her.
Martha was neither happy nor sad. She was of the wish that her late husband didn’t take his life. She wished he was alive to see today and the joy that had cometh. She wished he was alive today to see that she was not barren.
‘To be carnally minded is death but to be spiritually minded is life and Peace.
Desperation is destruction. Patient is life. Everyone needs to be patient in life. Being patient is a virtue. Whenever a man runs faster than he shadow; he is poised to run astray. And if care is not taken, he runs into destruction. Because whosoever that walks before his godly guardian does the race of his life. And he’s at a high risk of perishment.
Martha my friend, it’s unfortunate that it has to be this way. But God knows the best. And In whatever situation we find ourselves, we have to give God the glory.
Please be very happy for yourself. And be grateful to God. Look, I am very happy that at last, you have shamed those who thought you would never carry a baby in your womb…’
Mary was admonishing Martha one fateful day she cried to her, questioning God on why it has to be now her husband was no more.
Mary’s admonishment kept ringing like a bell in Martha’s head especially whenever that thought of questioning God surged up in her head.
When the news of Martha’s pregnancy got to her mother-in-law, she debunked it. And tagged the pregnancy as fake.
‘That lady is a witch. She has eaten up all the babies in her womb. Probably, she has faked a pregnancy so as to come for my son’s properties. But whatever antics she is preparing to come up with, we are ready to fight her tooth and nail..’, Martha’s mother-in-law said.
The pregnancy journey was not an easy one for Martha. She was going through hell. The baby was really punishing her so much.
At a point, Martha began to wonder whether the pregnancy was a curse to her. She even feared that her late husband had reincarnated so as to punish her.
Of the truth, the pregnancy was not really fair to her. Martha was disfigured so much that her beauty had vanished in thin air. She became fat, out of proportion. Her formerly looking sweet face had swollen up as if the bees waged a war against her. Her legs swollen so much to the extent she hardly walked.
The pregnancy made Martha lose the taste of food. She had turned into a saddest overnight as the spirit of mood swings tormented her mercilessly.
Martha became a toy in the hands of sickness. To the extent that her doctor had to assign her special female healthcare to be taking good care of her health at home.
In fact, Martha was a shadow of her former self.
Thank goodness for Mary who was always there for Martha. Mary supported Martha in all ramifications of life, especially spiritually.
Meanwhile, Martha had not lost contact with her well-wishers. No! She was still in contact with all of them, especially Aunty Ifeoma and Mba’s family. They all stuck with her both in good and bad and supported her in the little way they could.
These people, especially Mary, were the reason Martha was still alive. If not for them, Martha would have long taken her life even before her husband.
