Finally, Martha reached out to Aunty Ifeoma. She still had her number. She had it in a diary where she wrote down all her important contacts.
Martha called Aunty Ifeoma via WhatsApp.
‘Hello Ma. Good afternoon,’ Martha greeted when Aunty Ifeoma picked the call.
‘Good afternoon. Who is this?,’ Aunty Ifeoma asked. Though the voice reminded her of Martha. But she had to ask just to be very sure.
‘Mama, this is me..’
‘Martha..Martha is that you?,’ Aunty Ifeoma interrupted.
‘Mother, I am the one..,’ Martha replied.
Aunty Ifeoma screamed on top of her voice via the phone in joy. She couldn’t believe it.
‘Martha my daughter, are you sure you are the one?,’ she had to ask amid happiness.
‘Mama, I am the one. It’s your daughter, Martha,’ Martha replied.
‘Nne what happened. Why did you do this to me? Why did you have to leave without saying goodbye, ehn?,’ Aunty Ifeoma almost asked at the same time in tears.
‘Mama, I am sorry. I am very sorry for leaving without even a goodbye,’ she paused. ‘Mama, I was losing it in Lagos. I was going insane. I lost my peace in Lagos. In fact, Lagos hunted and tormented me so bádly that I had to leave. And go far away where the torment of Lagos and its inhabitants wouldn’t find me again. I had to leave to preserve my sanity,’ she sighed. ‘I know the way I left was not good. I am sorry. But mama, I am happy that I left Lagos. In fact, leaving Lagos was the best thing that happened to me..,’Martha explained, very apologetic.
‘Nne m, how are you doing? How are you faring? I hope you are eating well?
‘Mama, I am doing super well. I can afford whatever that I craved for. So do not worry about me..,’Martha explained.
‘What happened to your business in Lagos? How did you do your shop and the goods inside?,’ She asked.
‘I sold off everything. My neighbor bought everything from me,’ she replied.
‘Where are you now? What are you doing for a living now?,’ Aunty Ifeoma had to ask.
‘Mama, I am in Kaduna. I’m into business. The same business I was into in Lagos. That’s what I am still doing over here. And God has been so good and faithful to me,’ she replied.
‘That’s good to hear,’ she paused. ‘So I hope you let your heart open for love again? Because I know you very well, you will because of your past and now harden your heart for men..’
‘Mama don’t worry, my heart is partially open for men..’
‘So I hope your net has caught a big fish?’.
‘Mama, my net has been catching them but they keep escaping, breaking my heart. Most of them are after my money,’ she paused. ‘ Though I have one big fish in my net right now. But I don’t know how serious he is. Although he has promised me marriage. But I am not taking him that seriously until he does the necessary things,’ Martha explained.
‘My daughter, It’s well with you. Don’t worry, the right man will come. All you have to do is to trust in God. As God’s time is the best..,’ Aunty Ifeoma encouraged her so much.
‘Mama, how are the people of Canada?,’Martha asked .
‘I left them in good health. Although I am in Nigeria presently. I came back for a burial..,’ she was explaining before Martha interrupted her.
‘Mama, who died?,’ Martha asked.
‘Nne, Annabel is dead. Our pastor’s wife in Lagos. I lost my very good friend to the wîçkéd hand of déád after a brief illness..,’ Aunty Ifeoma explained.
Martha bursted into tears upon hearing that. She was so heartbroken hearing the demise of Mrs Annabel. Because Mrs Annabel was among the ladder that led her to where she’s today. It was Annabel and her husband that saved Martha from the hand of Mr. Ojo. Annabel was the person who linked up Martha with Aunty Ifeoma.
Their discussion continued.
Aunty Ifeoma also promised to come visit her in Kaduna before going back to Canada.
