🙎 A Daughter’s Revenge EPISODE FIFTY SIX:
Silent as Martha buried her head in thought. She couldn’t answer the question.
‘Martha, since KC has realized his mistake and has come asking for forgiveness, if truly he has changed or he is ready to change, I think you should forgive him. It’s very obvious that you still love him so much. You guys have come too far not to go further….’, Amaka advised.
‘Amaka I am very confused right now. KC still dominates the major part of my heart. Now Thompson…’Martha confessed amid confusion.
‘Who is Thompson?,’ Amaka intercepted.
‘Thompson is more like a son to my aunt, Ifeoma. He came back from Canada. And ever since he set his eyes on me, he has been on my neck. He has professed love to me in many ways and countless times. He has promised me heaven on earth. As a matter of fact, he said he wants to marry me as soon as I accept to be his woman,’ she paused. ‘The truth is that Thompson is a good man. If you talk of money, he has it. He is loving and caring. But I don’t really feel anything for him. I am seeing him more like a brother…,’ Martha explained.
‘I can’t advise you to jump into marriage with a total stranger. Marrying a man you just met barely a month ago is an uncalculated risk. However, the volume of the possible danger is high. Martha, the devil you know is far better than the angel you don’t know. Because you don’t know the true color of Thompson. Besides, you don’t even know whether he has a wife over there in Canada and wants to just marry and dump you here in Nigeria and turn you into his baby factory. And at the end, you end up becoming partially a window whereas your husband is alive. Therefore, joining the league of millions of Nigerian ladies whose husbands are abroad and visit maybe once in five or ten years. My dear, avoid it because that’s a bondage, not marriage..’, Amaka advised.
‘I am just confused here..’, Martha expressed her confused state of mind.
‘My dear, nothing to be confused about here. Don’t jump into a marriage with a total stranger, please. The reason I am so concerned here is that I have a friend in school who is into this abroad-marriage-bondage of a thing now. She is seriously regretting it. Because she has never set her eyes on her so-called husband for the past five years now. Tell me, how can a vibrant young lady cope without her man for this long period of time? How can that be possible?,’ she sighed. ‘All she does now is to sleep around with guys in school just to satisfy her sexûàl urge. As I am talking to you now, she has had countless of àbôrtîôns..,’ she paused. ‘The only thing I know my friend is enjoying in that ghost marriage is the money. The wealth is there to enjoy. She had a fleet of cars in her garage. The four bedroom duplex she’s living in the school was built by her husband..’, Amaka honestly advised.
‘Hmmm…Anyway, Thompson promised that after getting married to me, he would first go back and do paperwork for me to come over. Although that’s not my problem now. Because I don’t see us together. I don’t have any feelings for him at all. And no time for us, probably, to build something from scratch. So the possibility of the marriage becoming possible is not realistic. It’s not workable at all..’, Martha said.
“Whether he is taking you along with him or bringing you over after he must have gone back is none of my business. All I am saying is that the devîl you know is better than the angel you don’t know. So that you don’t end up from the fry pan to the fire,’ he paused. ‘Martha, in a nutshell, since you still love KC, forgive him and give him a second chance. Who knows if he’s a changed person now. Give him a chance. Because you guys have come a long way to just end it halfway now…’, she advised.
Amidst the discussion, a customer walked into Martha’s shop. Then Martha had to go attend to the customer.
Ever since Martha left Kelechi’s life, he has been in total hèll. His life has been a shamble. Nothing was working again. His business was crumbling. In fact, everything about him was falling apart. It was then he realized the value of Martha in his life. It was then he came to term that Martha was the pillar of his success. No wonder a saying says that you don’t know what you have until you lose it.
And when things fall apart, the center can no longer hold.
Meanwhile, Kelechi has been doing everything possible best to reconcile with Martha. Although it seemed like all his efforts were proving abortive. But KC kept the hope alive, tripling his efforts for reconciliation.
KC pleadings to Martha for forgiveness and reconciliation seemed like pouring of water on the stone. As such, he had to send people to go plead to Martha on his behalf. When I say people, I mean people that matter in that market square. And all of them have gone to talk to Martha to forgive KC but Martha kept giving them negative replies.
Recently, KC has started going to church. The same KC that has refused going to church for the past years now. Not just that, he had changed church to that of Martha’s church just to avail himself the opportunity to be seeing her and as well continue pleading for her forgiveness.
The main purpose of Thompson coming back to Nigeria was to utilize his one month holiday period to finish his building projects in Asaba and village respectively. He never had it in his plan to get a wife. But as the golden opportunity had presented itself, he decided to use one stone to kîll two birds. However, no man can serve two masters at the same time; for either he will be more dedicated to one, and less dedicated to the other. That was the major problem Thompson had. As he had not much time on his side to prove his love for Martha.
Although Thompson kept trying his best. But his best seemed not to be strong enough to convince Martha to jump into a marriage with a stranger like him amid her battle with heartbreak.
Already, Thompson time was almost up in Nigeria. He had three days to spend in Nigeria and return back to Canada.
Meanwhile, Martha had not given him any positive feedback on his proposal; it was still the same negative response he kept getting anytime he shot his shot.
However, whether Martha accepts him or not, Thompson must go back to Canada. No two ways about it. Already, he had started getting himself ready to jet off. And he was never happy as he wished he had more time to be of help in healing Martha’s wounded heart and as well proved his love to her beyond every reasonable doubt.
Finally, Thompson had traveled back to Canada. He really felt bad for missing out on Martha. As he doesn’t know what tomorrow will be. Because he wasn’t sure if he would come back and still meet her single next year.
Meanwhile Martha’s fatigue was becoming worse everyday by day. And worst still, she had been noticing an early morning sickness.
All these symptoms were not good as a single lady.
‘What’s wrong with me? For the past two months now, I have not been myself. And I have been treating malaria and typhoid all to no avail,’ she paused while entertaining so many thoughts. ‘Are mine pregnant?,’ she asked herself. ‘But how can I be pregnant and still be seeing my period? I have never missed my period’, Martha had to reply to herself. ‘I think I have to go see a doctor. Yes! I have to. At least, let me know what exactly is wrong with me..’, she concluded.
