Martha and KC were not committed to each other in any way.
But KC was so much attached to Martha emotionally. Likewise Martha. Just that KC lacked the courage to openly profess his love for her.
KC was a young man yet to start a life. He was still in transition.
He was learning a trade in Festus’s shop in the same line with Martha. Just that their shop was far inside. Festus was KC’s Inlaw. As he was a husband to KC’s elder sister, Blessing.
There was a time when KC maintained a long distance from Martha. It was a very hard decision he had to take for the sake of his dear life.
However, the sudden attitude of KC didn’t go down well with Martha herself. She really felt bad about why KC was running away from her. Because she would call KC on the phone but he wouldn’t pick up her calls. Anytime the two coincidentally crossed paths, KC would be dulging her.
One fateful day, Martha picked up courage and went to Oga Festus’s shop to accost KC. On getting there, KC was the only one in the shop. She demanded to know what wrong she had done to deserve the whole of these punishments. She accosted him with tears. Even KC could not help but shed tears with her as well. At the end, KC pleaded with Martha to stay away from him and that his life was at risk because of her.
‘Who are those after your life because of me?’, Martha asked with a trembling voice.
Silence prevailed as KC was lost in sober reflection.
‘A Diochi (the palm wine tapper) cannot disclose everything he sees while on top of a palm wine. Some things are better left unsaid,’ he paused. ‘Martha, I love you so much. And if you love me, please keep away from me..’ KC was telling her that day amid tears.
After all said and done, Martha left the shop in tears.
Martha was totally heartbroken.
But she managed to adjust to living without KC in her life.
Oga Emma was the architect of the whole problem.
You know In the market, most people were living with the misconception that KC was dating Martha. And most of them, especially Ndi Oga, were seeing KC as an obstacle. That it was because of him Martha was proving hard to get.
Oga Emma was ever ready to crush anyone standing as an obstacle on his way to lure Martha on his bed. At first, he warned KC to stay away from Martha but he refused to do so. He then accosted KC with some ‘Area Boiz’ and beat hell out of him that day. He threatened to kîłł him if he did not stay far away from Martha from that day henceforth.
For the fact is that only a tree would hear that it will be cutted off and still stand unshakable. KC had to run for his life.
That was the reason he distanced himself from Martha back then.
Meanwhile Oga Emma also warned KC at gunpoint never to disclose their encounter to Martha. That he should keep it as a secret. That if he refused to do so, he should consider himself dèàd.
Though KC still went ahead to table the whole thing to Martha. But that was when the whole thing calmed down. It was after one good year.
In return, Martha explained to KC everything that transpired between her and Oga Emma without leaving any stone unturned.
And KC was very happy that Oga Emma didn’t have his way into Martha.
Martha never lacked admirers even in the school. She had many admirers both the open and secret ones.
The manner at which Martha dressed to school said a lot of positive things about her. She loves dressing very corporately. And the way she used to carry herself always sent fear down the spine of her secret admirers.
Martha was not a ‘mean’ lady. She was very jovial down to earth and always wore a smile on her face. But despite all these, most men were still very much afraid to approach her.
They find her stature very intimidating.
Big and bold. That she was.
Those who had the courage to approach her always got the No answer in a very politeful manner. In fact, most of them end up becoming her friends.
Despite her short time in the institution, Martha had made friends beyond imagination. Even lecturers were included in her circle of friends.
Alhaji Musa has posed the biggest problem for Martha in the school. The professor of English Language has sworn to never allow Martha to drink water and drop the cup in peace.
All he wanted was for Martha to accept his proposal.
